Cardenden-born Rankin, who is best known for his Inspector Rebus, said he is delighted that his books are helping Oxfam.
"It's great to be Oxfam's most purchased author for the second year in a row — and I'm really pleased that readers are donating my books to Oxfam too.
"Just looking at the terrible scenes from Pakistan and West Africa on our TV screens at the moment it is clear how important the work of organisations like Oxfam is, and I'm really glad that my books are going some way to help this vital work."
Books sell for an average of £1.60 in Oxfam shops and the proceeds from just five books provide emergency food rations for a family, while the sale of 20 books could raise enough money for special training and equipment to set up a small business.
Judith Robertson, head of Oxfam Scotland, said, "It is pleasing to see that a Scottish author is so popular among Oxfam customers throughout the UK.
"Ian's books have been entertaining people for years and now they are helping Oxfam in our fight for a fairer future for all."
