A ceremony was held at Caird Hall for the freshers, where they heard speeches by the university principal and the president of the students' association.

Lord Provost John Letford said: "The university and the city are increasingly becoming places where the brightest and best students from the UK and beyond choose to study.

"It is a source of pride for me to be representing the city at this event, and it is a great privilege to extend the hand of welcome to this new intake of young people. Hopefully this is only the beginning of a long-term friendship that will bear fruit for everyone involved."

Professor Pete Downes, principal and vice-chancellor, said: "Our success as a university is measured not just in academic terms, but in the impact we have in the real world of finite resources, economic regeneration, human health and cultural richness.

"We have a vital role to play in the cultural life and economic well-being of the city which is transformed by the return of our student population."

Students' association president Iain Kennedy said this year's Freshers' Week was the best the university had ever held and he would be urging the new intake to get involved in the many societies and activities on offer.

Many of the new students enjoyed a musical welcome to Dundee on Sunday night when city band The View played at the students' association.
