Glamis Castle and Tayroots host family genealogy event

Rooms that have witnessed centuries of history of the Earls of Strathmore have welcomed others going in search of their own family tree.

In a day-long event, Glamis Castle joined with the Tayroots genealogy project to offer a free family history session in the main exhibition room for experienced and novice genealogists to find out more about their ancestors.

Volunteers from the Tay Valley Family History Society shared their experience to help visitors research families from Angus, Fife, Kinross and Perthshire.

Libby Reynolds of Glamis Castle said, "We are delighted to be involved with the Tayroots family history taster session.

"I often hear visitors from America, Australia and Canada mention their family ties to the area."

Castle archivist Ingrid Thomson also took part in the event and used the taster session to make her own plea for a little help on behalf of the castle.

She said, "The castle received its first paying visitors on July 16, 1950, when admission was 2s 6d.

"I would love to share people's memories of those early visits to Glamis and look at any photos they may have of those trips."
