The decision was made to honour one of the most prestigious athletic members of the school with the trophy taking the new title of the Downie Trophy.
Pupil Michael Downie left in the summer after many years of success while representing Carnoustie in athletic events all over Britain.

He provided the school with a comprehensive list of achievements.
A few of Michael's national highlights include being undefeated at high jump for the whole of 2005.
In 2007 he got a silver medal at the British Schools indoor pentathlon and gold while competing against the best athletes from Wales, Ireland and Ulster in the Celtic Games.
In 2009 he won the Scottish schools pentathlon and octathlon recording the second highest score of all time while doing so.
His success did not stop there, however, and Michael went on to win gold at the British decathlon, British indoor pentathlon and was voted top British multi eventer in 2009.
He continued his success into his last year of school, winning the Scottish indoor heptathlon and outdoor pentathlon, breaking the Scottish record in doing so.
