The two-day AppJam event — with 10 teams of three pitted against each other — is part of the wider International App Development Conference being held at the venue.
Keynote speakers at the three-day conference — which is also part of the NEoN 10 Digital Arts Festival which is continuing across the city — include Replay Games founder Paul Trowe and Mark Ettle, chief executive officer of Cobra Mobile (UK).
The conference and AppJam have been organised by Dundee College and part-funded by the Interreg Creative City Challenge.
Dundee College creative industries project manager Andy Mackenzie said the city and college's strength in the digital media meant it was the perfect location for such a ground-breaking event.
"The college is ideally suited to host a conference of this sort as we have the proficiency needed to respond to the industry's training requirements," he said.
"Dundee is home to a strong cluster of digital entertainment talent and, in keeping with its remit as a training provider, Dundee College has to reflect the industry requirements in its curriculum."
