Walkers stopped in their tracks by sight of black swans

A pair of black swans have been turning heads at the mouth of the Dighty in Monifieth.

David Thomson, who spotted the birds, said their origin was a talking point among dog walkers.

"It's not a common sight anywhere and I don't know where they came from," he said. "I spoke to a few other dogwalkers and they have never seen them before either.

"I do know they are in the Swan River in Perth, Australia, and they gifted black swans to the city of Perth in Scotland many, many years ago."

According to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, sightings of black swans have become more common and they are often found in areas which attract mute swans.

They were brought to the UK as ornamental birds but some escaped captivity and found their way into the wild.
