Boats galore at the Anstruther Muster

The largest annual gathering of yachts on Scotland's east coast was to be found in the East Neuk of Fife as the Anstruther Muster brought a wealth of activity and spectacle to the harbour.

The popular event organised by Anstruther Sailing Club also showcased the harbour's attraction as a base and cruising destination, and provided a mini-boost for the local economy.

Around 100 boats from near and far took part, with activities beginning in the middle of last week and the main programme taking place thoughout Saturday.

Crews were welcomed by the club and its commodore Cairns Birrell, who paid tribute to the support given by local residents, community groups, and businesses.

On Saturday a big attraction for the sailors was the East Coast Boat Jumble, but there was something for everyone with a model boat club exhibition in the Scottish Fisheries Museum, stalls and face painting.

There were also events involving cocktail making, Highland dancing, a coastal walk, a barbecue at the lifeboat station and entertainment in the marquee.

In addition there were cookery demonstrations involving Adam Smith College students and staff, including the college's own television chef Eadie Manson and his award-winning colleague Pam Fowlis.

No muster would be complete without some actual sailing, and races were encouraged to finish at Anstruther on the Saturday, and start homeward yesterday.

The muster, which started back in 1997 with just nine boats, was supported by Celebrating Fife 2010, Velux and Adam Smith College. It was also actively encouraged by Forth Yacht Clubs Association.
