New lease deal will see Angus Council take 30% of Arbroath Vics' car boot sale profits

Angus Council is to take a slice of profits from an Arbroath junior football club's car boot sales.

Arbroath Victoria Football Club will give the council 30% of the profits, as part of a lease deal that starts next April.

Arbroath Vics' new terms for the lease of ground at Ogilvy Park caused concern to Councillor Rob Murray, who feared a precedent was being set.

He doesn't want the council to take cash from hard pressed voluntary organisations but was told the Vics were happy with the arrangement.

He raised the issue at Angus Council's corporate services committee in Forfar where members were asked to approve the renegotiated terms for Arbroath Vics.

The club currently pays £700 a year for the lease on the ground and was not due for a rent review for another two years.

Wanting to hold boot sales to help with club funds, the Vics approached the council to negotiate a new lease.

The new terms will see boot sales held at Ogilvy Park on Sundays between April and September each year.

The agreement also sees a hike in the rent to £1000 a year and 30% of the car boot sales profits handed over to Angus Council.

The junior football club investigated the possibility of holding car boot sales at Ogilvy Park after the now-defunct Arbroath Sporting Club stopped holding car boot sales at Seaton Park.

ASC folded after Angus Council proposed a massive hike in rent to take account of the income the club received from car boot sales at Seaton Park. The club said it could not meet the sums proposed by the council.

When the terms of the Vics' new lease were placed before the corporate services committee members along with other property transactions for approval, Mr Murray spoke up.

Looks like the Council has been taking lessons from a certain Danny Alexander!!

Shameful. It is a protection racket and the council could be mistaken for the mob. They rent the land to a not for profit organisation that should be the end of it as far as the council is concerned. They've already put one club out of business due to this abuse of someone elses fundraising.

Arbroath, it's people and organisations are being fleeced by this council. They take our money but give very little back. This, the common good fund debacle indicates there is no level low enought that this abusive council wont stoop to.

Is this Angus Councils idea of implementing David Camerons 'Big Society' idea? Try and help your community/organisation by working for free and the government will come in and fleece any of your fundraising activities. Lets hope the electorate has a long memory the next time elections come around!
