Yvonne Carrie twice contacted the council's community alarm service, but no help was sent to her and she was found dead at her home in the village of Inveraldie, north of Dundee, 11 hours later by her carer.

A family spokeswoman welcomed the suspensions, but said: ''We still want answers about what happened.''

She added that the family had stressed to the council they did not want the investigation to drag on and had been told in reply that it was looking at a timescale of weeks rather than months, although it could not say exactly when the outcome would be known.

Mrs Carrie died just over two weeks ago and she was buried on Friday. Her family have demanded to know why her alerts to the community alarm service control centre in Kirriemuir apparently did not trigger action that might have saved her life.

An Angus Council spokesman said: ''Social work staff were in contact with members of the family shortly after Mrs Carrie's death to express the council's condolences and to advise them that a full investigation was being carried out.

''That investigation continues and we have today advised the family that four members of staff have been suspended pending its outcome.

''When the investigation has been completed, we have agreed with the family that the director of social work will meet with them to discuss the findings.''

This suituation must be creating great anguish for Mrs Carne's family and they should not be left waiting months for answers. The council itself should also recognise that itself requires a speedy enquiry largely depandant as they are on this system working well as part of community care support.

Sad news about he community alarm service in Angus. As a child of a parent using the service in Dundee, I can say it is fantastic by comparison.
