Edward Cairney (59) spotted the seemingly disc-shaped object on Wednesday afternoon when looking west towards Dundee from the rear window of his home in Arbroath.
He took two pictures of the UFO, between 1.50-2.10pm, before it disappeared from view.
He said: ''It was around sunset and at first I thought it was maybe just the moon shining in a strange way or something like that.''
He added: ''I was standing at the back window looking to the west towards Dundee. There were a couple of passengers planes in the sky and, as the sun set, there was a bit of an air passage towards the west.
''The planes were painted red by the sunshine but this thing wasn't. It was just so weird.''
Mr Cairney, who lives in Strathairlie Avenue, said his son Ross (28) also saw the light as he was driving to Dundee.

''My son was travelling to Dundee and he phoned to say he saw it. He was about 15 miles away at the time and he said it looked like a light in the sky.''
A spokesman for RAF Leuchars confirmed there had been no activity in the area and nothing unusual had appeared on the radar.
After seeing the picture Matt Lyons, chairman of the British UFO Research Association, suggested a number of theories — including a streak on the camera lens — but said further analysis would be required.

Well Be EBoy (Hirst) has photos of this as well, so you can rule something on the lens a no no.

I live in West Ferry and I saw a very bright light to the west of the Oil Rig at about 5pm last night. At first, I thought it may be a plane. Often I see local planes approaching and turning to land but after watching for a few minutes it did not move position and no side lights.

My partner and I also saw this weird cloud and my guess was it was some sort of 'Northern lights' only it was during the day.

I saw the 'ligh't as well when travelling between Lindores and Ladybank around 4.00pm. There were grey and pink clouds moving quite fast below it and as it was not moving, I thought it might be a lens shaped cloud at high altitude.

I can confirm that it was a UFO. Two alien creatures came to my door on Wednesday and we had some afternoon tea and cake. They said that they had been chasing a man dressed in red a few days before and had got lost. I managed to get them directions to planet Splog from the internet and they left.

i have also got some photos of the cloud from Redford village. The cloud is a high altitude cloud which was high enough to stil collect sunlight during the normal sunset. Over the minutes i observed it, it dispersed and appeared to disapear as the sun dropped futher down below the horizon.

A cloud of ice crystals in stratosphere catching the setting sun. Mystery solved.

It looks like a cloud high up in the stratosphere being illuminated from below the horizon by the setting sun.
