Firefighters cut through the mangled wreckage of the silver BMW, to free the injured woman passenger and the car's male driver, following the accident near Brechin at around 1.40pm on Sunday.
The vehicle had come to rest on its roof on the grass verge, with the woman's arm trapped under its full weight.
Two crews from Brechin Fire Station used cutting and lifting gear and the woman was able to crawl free.
The door of the car had to be forced off to allow the man to get out.
Paramedics attended the scene, taking both casualties to Ninewells Hopsital.
Sergeant Mark Hill said the car had been travelling north towards Aberdeen when it was caught in a sudden downpour.
He added: ''At around 1.45 there was a heavy rain shower. The vehicle has left the road and overturned on to the verge. There was one male driver and a female passenger trapped within the vehicle.''
Officers confirmed the man was in his 50s and the woman was in her 40s. Both are from the Aberdeen area.
