Shop tills see drop from record-breaking years

Thousands of people in Tayside and Fife were out in the city centre for the last full weekend of Christmas shopping.

However, the crowds appeared to fall short of previous record-breaking years.

Although no official figures were available, Susie Fisher from Dundee's Overgate Centre said an estimated 60,000 people had gone through the centre yesterday.

However, a spokesperson for the Wellgate said while it was very steady, overall it wasn't as busy as previous years.

Dundonians on Twitter confirmed that feeling, with one man saying ''Christmas shopping, town quiet.''

Thousands more shoppers packed into Kingsway West retail park, while Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Asda supermarkets were also busy.

Electronic goods, mobile phones, computers and DVDs appeared to be the most popular items as shoppers made sure they took advantage of the many sale bargains.

Many stores have already started the traditional Boxing Day sales early and retail experts are predicting price cuts that could last for months.

Maybe people are realising that love and happiness can`t be bought. We don`nt "need" to buy kids Ipods, Iphones, Playstations or Wii`s, what they need is stability, support and unconditional love which is absolutley free. Greed is rather ugly, while altruism is a quality to aim for.

Anyone with any financial sense and an online computer will buy stuff over the internet since it's MUCH cheaper than the High Street, shopping malls or retail parks. There's nothing Mary Portas can do to fix that.

phillip christmas is about special gifts for special people, getting out picking stuff is what its about. online shopping is for stack 'em high sell 'em cheap - certainly not what i want for loved ones. online shopping is for couch potatoes and is anti-social - some people need to get out more!

Although the shops in Dundee may not be as good as Edinburgh and Glasgow, I still think that there are a great selection of shops and restaurants in the city. Compared to 10 years ago the transformation is incredible.

mark - I'm glad you are so well off that you don't have to watch what you spend at Christmas. Unfortunately this is not the case for most people.

If you do not spend in the city then the shops close and Dundee city centre shopping dies. There is no magic fix for that fact. The council should pull out the stops and encourage free parking at weekends etc because if shops shut then rates income falls too. A bit of a double edged sword.
