Expect delays — drivers asked to show patience at start of 12-week South Marketgait roadworks

South Marketgait will be closed to eastbound traffic at City Quay roundabout. Drivers will be diverted via the inner ring road, while vehicles seeking access to Commercial Street, Gellatly Street, Trades Lane and Dock Street will be encouraged to use Seagate.

The £500,000 project is the next phase in the multi-million-pound transformation of the central waterfront and will see South Marketgait realigned at its junction with Commercial Street.

A spokesman for Dundee City Council insisted no businesses would be directly affected by the work, which is expected to go on into the autumn, but motorists have been warned to expect delays.

"The city centre will be open for business as usual during this period of crucial work," the spokesman added. "Funded by Dundee City Council, Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Government, the multi-million-pound transformation of Dundee's waterfront will continue the process of reinvigorating the city and making Dundee the ideal place to live, work and visit."

The work is part of a major project to regenerate the city's waterfront, which has been described as "one of the most notable and forward-thinking in Scotland today" by council leader Ken Guild.

Mr Guild, who is also chairman of the Dundee Waterfront Board, added, "Dundee City Council, its partners and the contractor have put in a great deal of effort carefully planning the job to minimise disruption.

"But this crucial work will also need the co-operation and patience of drivers and local businesses and residents."

Next on the plan is the demolition of Tayside House and Olympia, with work well under way on the replacement swimming and leisure centre at Allan Street. Work on the road bridge network is expected to be completed in 2014 in time for the scheduled opening of the Victoria and Albert Museum in Dundee.

The long-term aim of the £925 million waterfront project is to extend the city centre down to the Tay, with the creation of a new street plan and the realignment of the road bridge ramps.

A pair of tree-lined boulevards will replace the existing inner ring road, creating a major new civic space and reopened dock stretching from the Caird Hall to the river. The boulevards will carry traffic through the area and channel the bridge traffic in and out of the city centre.

The bridge ramps themselves are being reconstructed to create a more direct connection with the new road pattern.

The final development will have a new grid street pattern based on the historical routes to the north and improved facilities for walking, cycling and public transport.

A dedicated public transport line will be kept along the path of the existing bus routes along Dock Street and a new integrated transport hub will see coaches stop outside the railway station for the first time.

Project officials say commuters will enjoy an easier way in and out of the city, with all forms of public transport available to rail passengers arriving at the rail station.

The traffic managment is a joke. The traffic lights have not been used effectively to clear the queues. The roundabout at the bridge into City Quay is the worst, with selfish idiots in the wrong lane forcing their way past other waiting drivers. Road Rage at these folk is justified.

What gets me most is the Idiots who don't read signs!! If people read all the signs and didn't head towards the city quay roundabout east bound and think they could dodge traffic by heading past the apex it would solve a major problem!

road planners in dundee are useless - they seem to think the only way to control traffic is through traffic lights - we must have more traffic lights in dundee than any other city - their reliance on them needs to stop. Traffic management i about getting the traffic flowing efficiently, not holding

people up at traffic lights. there are 7 sets of traffic lights within 1/4 of a mile of each other when travelling to perth - this is absolute nonsense, especially when travelling at ngiht through the city. Its no wonder there are areas of the city that have problems with high emmisions.
