A celebration of Dundee's young people brought a splash of colour to the city centre on Saturday with the eighth annual Lord Provost's Youth Parade.

The event, which was set up to provide a platform for the young people in Dundee and its twin cities, kicked off with a lively procession from Dundee High School to City Square.

A stage was set up there to showcase the wide variety of talented youngsters the city has produced.

The fun continued with stalls and musical and dance performances as well as races hosted by Sprint Dundee.

"The annual youth parade is a must-see event in the life of our city and we're delighted to have such a positive response for participants in the parade from the youth of Dundee," said Lord Provost John Letford.

"This event is a superb way to highlight the talent and enthusiasm of our city's young people and the support they receive from the rest of the city."

Before the parade got under way, Mr Letford helped to launch a youth council consultation.

Dundee Youth Council, which was set up in March, hopes the survey will reveal the views of young people in the city and give them a voice on a range of issues.

The youth festival celebrations concluded with a gala fundraising dinner in the Apex Hotel on Sunday night.

The large amounts of youth work done by John Letford over the last few months, has gone a long way to help restore faith in our city leader. Of all the city's Cllrs, John has unapologetically led the way in embracing youth issues. This is clearly not just 4 press. Cllrs should follow his example.

A couple of years ago the Scottish govt. paid kids to stay on in school, or something similar. They should resurrect this idea and pay kids to get involved with all these useful groups who would teach them manners and responsibility, as well how to boil an egg and peel a tattie.

John Letford does not do youth work. He supports Youth Work in the city. It is people like The Shore, Xplore, and all the youth workers who work in different areas of the town who do the work. I was pleased to see them out and about on Saturday and taing part in the parade well done to them .

@Cory Douglas - Mr Letford jumps at any chance to don his ceremonial chain and parade himself. Local voters will never forget how he sold out his Labour roots and ideals in order to remain Lord Provost

@Arthur. Too true...yes too true ... I forgot about his betrayal of his ward and the city, to get the losing SNP party into power but has he not redeemed himself with all his youth work? Surely he has solved the majority of the youth issues in Dundee has he not?

03.03pm - 31.08.2011  Engelbert Pumpernickle - Dundee, Scotland    Report This

Yes....all youth issues in Dundee have been solved by the lord provost's youth work.
