Convener pleased with progress on Dundee's new multi-storey car park

Work on a multi-storey car park in the centre of Dundee is progressing well.

Councillor Will Dawson on the site.

That was the message delivered to the Will Dawson, convener of Dundee City Council's city development committee by contractors Mansell Construction Services as he paid a visit to the site.

The 20-metre-high structure is part of the city's £31.5 million leisure pool development on East Marketgait/East Whale Lane which, when finished, will accommodate up to 500 cars.

Mr Dawson said: "With the impressive rate at which the leisure pool next door is progressing it is important that we do not forget that the number of safe, high quality parking spaces in the city will be boosted by this new car park.

"Dundee already has excellent off-street parking provision at Greenmarket and Gellatly Street and the latest addition will mean that there really is no excuse for commuters or visitors who come to the city by car to park anywhere else."

Accessed from East Whale Lane the multi-storey car park will have a link to the new leisure pool and pedestrian access to both East Marketgait and the adjacent Gallagher Retail Park.

Mr Dawson continued: "In recent years the council has spent considerable time and money ensuring that motorists have well-lit, well-surfaced and weather-proof off-street car parks where we know that drivers feel more secure about themselves and their vehicles.

"The addition of a new one, again perfectly placed on the inner ring road to provide access to it by car and from it on foot to the main shopping and commercial areas of the city centre, can only be a benefit."

While other cities are encouraging motorists to leave their cars at home, Dundee builds yet another ugly multi-storey car park... Why not build them out of town and offer a park and ride service into the city?

eyesore, why not use the vaccant land beside tesco riverside for swimming/car park.

@ Bob Truth - The land in question, i believe, is owned by H&H Properties who planned to put waterfront appartments on it (when the housing market recovers)

Eyesore is the word. Dundee seems to lurch from one to another. As Tayside house is about to come down this monstrosity is on its way up. At right angles to the main road, it will be the most in-your-face building in town. Couldn't the architects at least embellish it with some decoration?

"there really is no excuse for commuters or visitors who come to the city by car to park anywhere else." Except, of course, the cheapskate Uni parkers, who park in the West End, clogging up narrow lanes as it's free. They could already use the rarely full Greenmarket. But that costs.

We see on all the buses to leave the car at home and use the bus, we worry about fuel prices going up, so why do we build another multi-story car park to encourage people to take their cars???

11.28am - 28.09.2011  adam - dundee, uk    Report This

well there is another carpark built on the campus of dundee university on hawkhill but there are hardly any students drive so it is a waste of car park so there is room for improvment there if people in the area got permits to park in there

A bit radical I know, but we could just make car parking free (or extremely cheap) in multi-storeys. Of course, only publicly run ones could do this but it would alleviate "nuisance parking" and congestion.
