Innovative approach to using Tayside House waste carpet

As work continues to strip out the interior of Tayside House in preparation for its demolition early next year, an initiative is ensuring disadvantaged Dundonians will benefit from the waste.

Liam Hall, fitter Colin Cuthbert and manager Alex Fyffe take carpet tiles away.

The removal of fixtures and fittings is creating opportunities.

With enough carpet tiles to cover more than five football pitches, many eyes are on the floor, which is when the Clean Close Company stepped in with an innovative idea.

Alex Fyffe of the company said: "Looking at the amount of reusable floor coverings around just now we decided to launch the Clean Carpet Company, as a carpet reuse/recycling project.

"The whole ethos of the project is to be a socially responsible enterprise committed to diverting carpet and carpet tiles from landfill.

"Every year in the UK around 500,000 tonnes of carpet waste, much of which is either new or can be reused, goes to landfill.

"The Clean Carpet Company is committed to reducing carpet waste in Dundee, with the support of local authorities, organisations, businesses and through its membership of Carpet Recycling UK."

Mr Fyffe added: "We are able to provide access to floor coverings to people who are experiencing financial hardship by working with local organisations, councils and other public bodies.

"The project also provides employment and training opportunities and has already created nine full and part-time positions."

Company staff are at work in Tayside House recovering as many carpet tiles as possible, with thousands already reclaimed and diverted from landfill.

The demolition will be carried out over a series of stages that begins with removing the smaller podium block that lies between the tower and Caird Hall, along with the pedestrian walkway that crosses South Marketgait over to the Earl Grey car park.

I'm sure someone will find a use for even the "un-usable" tiles, ...in the garden perhaps? Old carpets laid face down are a good weed barrier!

This is an excellent idea. Now, how about stopping the ridiculous waste when the Council insist on flooring (sometimes in perfectly good condition) being removed when a tenancy is ended. Most outgoing tenants would be pleased to leave it to help some possibly disadvantaged incoming tenant.
