Dundee Sheriff Court heard on Thursday that Peter Marshall (53), of Troon Gardens, had left the taxi and gone into a lap dancing club and staff there had taken the knife from him.
Marshall admitted that on November 6, in Lochee High Street and within a taxi heading towards Ward Road, and at Private Eyes, Rattray Street, he possessed a knife.
The court heard Marshall was in a taxi queue shortly after midnight and after speaking to an unknown couple they all agreed to share a taxi into town.
During the journey, the accused pulled out a knife and told the others: ''This is for the junkie'' who he said had been causing trouble to a family member.
After he got out in Ward Road, the taxi driver called the police. Marshall went into the club and put the knife on the bar.
The barman took the knife and the accused was ejected from the club.
Two days later, police were told by door staff of the incident and the knife was recovered from the club manager.
When interviewed by police, the accused admitted having the knife in the taxi and at another address in the city, but could not remember having it in the club.
Solicitor Gary McIlravey told the court Marshall was on anti-depressants and had taken alcohol on top of them.
Sheriff Way ordered Marshall to undertake 180 hours unpaid work in the community, to be completed within six months, and placed him on supervision for 14 months.
