Dundee school 'shamed' by bullying allegations

The Dundee mother of a "severely bullied" 10-yearold boy said his primary school should "hang its head in shame" at the way it has dealt with the allegations.

The mother, whose child attends Rowantree Primary School, claimed the youngster had been repeatedly targeted by older pupils for the last four or five months.

She told The Courier, "I have had meetings with the school and contacted the police and my local MP.

"Each time I am being told the matter is being 'dealt with.'

"The children involved are excluded for a maximum of three days and then allowed back to inflict the same injuries on my son."

The woman said she had to collect her son from the school last month due to an injury caused by another child allegedly kicking him in the head.

She said, "Where does it end? With my child in hospital?

"I have received countless phone calls, usually once or twice a week, letting me know what injuries my son has endured on each occasion."

Hardcore

The mother said that a "hardcore" of youngsters had subjected her son to the attacks.

She said, "Surely the children involved should be closely monitored, given the circumstances.

"I was told this was the case and yet one child had managed to bypass all the teachers and school monitors to attack my son in the dinner hall."

The woman claimed that, although it was not explicitly stated, the school "insinuated" that it "might be easier" if her son moved to another school.

She said, "I find this completely unacceptable and I am at a complete loss as to what to do next.

"The school should hang its head in shame for allowing this to happen on its premises on an almost daily basis."

A Dundee City Council education department spokesman said, "The school always takes any allegations of bullying extremely seriously.

"Unacceptable bullying behaviour is dealt with by appropriate action and this can involve exclusion.

"Staff are available to talk about these issues and respond to the concerns of families.

"Dundee schools are operating a new anti-bullying policy which is designed to help protect victims and deal with intimidating behaviour."
