Even more amazingly, it is the second time in less than a year that he has scooped a five-figure sum.

The man walked into a William Hill shop on Friday night and placed a reverse forecast patent — essentially picking the first two to cross the line in three separate races.

Two of the races were at dog tracks in Nottingham and Peterborough and the third was a horse race at Wolverhampton.

All his selections were correct and the man won £32,581.60. He can add that to the £45,000 he won on a similar bet in 2011.

William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly said that while the bet sounded complicated, they thought they had sussed out the punter's approach.

''Looking at his selections he only goes for horses or dogs numbered one or two.''

Joe joked: ''We will be keeping our eyes peeled for anyone following the same formula and are even considering getting in touch with the British Horse Racing Authority and the Greyhound Board of Great Britain to see if they would consider numbering all their dogs and horses from three upwards.''

Delving back into the archives, the company found that the man's previous winning bet was exactly the same, backing horses and dogs numbered one or two in a £5 reverse forecast patent.

''It is clearly a formula that works,'' said Joe.

For the record the winning selections were Nottingham — 1 Salacres Gal (7/2) 2 Slaneyside Davey (2/1); Peterborough — 1 Southoe Bell (4/1) 2 Forgot The Past (2/1); and Wolverhampton — 1 Cwmni (6/1) 2 Look For Love (3/1).
