The 31-year-old was heading up Forebank Road, close to Victoria Road, when he was the victim of the unprovoked assault.

A man crossed the road and punched him to the ground before making off. Two good Samaritans came to the victim's aid and called an ambulance.

The man was then taken to Ninewells Hospital, where he received treatment — including stitches — for his injuries.

Detective Inspector Kevin McMahon said officers are keen to speak to the duo who helped the injured man.

He said: ''At about 7.30pm on Sunday, a 31-year-old man was walking northwards up Forebank Road. Another male has crossed the road and, for no reason whatsoever, punched him once in the head.

''The victim had to go to Ninewells for stitches and he was left disorientated. I would appeal for anyone who was in the area at the time, especially the two people who went to his aid, to come forward.''

The attacker is described as having short hair, being between 25 and 30, and of medium build. He spoke with a Scottish accent.

Forebank Road runs between the busy Victoria Road at the back of the Wellgate Centre and Alexander Street.

Local councillor Craig Melville said: "This is really disappointing to hear. It gives the area a bad name, although I would say it is still a safe area and this type of incident is uncommon.

''It is a cowardly act to say the least, being unprovoked, and is the sort of thing that needs to be stamped out across the city.''

Anyone with any information that could help police inquiries should call 0300 111 2222 or speak to any officer.

Well Councillor Melville, maybe it would help if our police officers got out of their cars more often and foot patrolled our streets. You, as a councillor, can help make this happen.
