After buying more electric-powered cars and vans for the council fleet, the authority's environment committee is being asked to approve charging points across the city.
Transport Scotland is providing almost £90,000 for a 'rapid' charger in the city centre underground car park and eight 'fast' chargers at other council locations.
It is thought more money will come next year for charging facilities at council sites.
Environment committee convener Bob Duncan said: ''This is another important step in our commitment to environmentally-friendly transport.
''We are monitoring the use of our current pool of vehicles very closely and we will have to report the use of the chargers to Transport Scotland on a regular basis.
''The charging points across the city would provide for a wide support network for the vehicles allowing more efficient use.''
The council ultimately wants every central car park to have recharging bays for carbon-free vehicles, and to encourage people to switch from petrol and diesel cars to electric-powered vehicles
Last month it approved spending of almost £140,000 on four electric cars and two vans to add to the council fleet.

What a waste of public money, if the truth was known these cars have broken down over the last few months due to running out of power because of operator error, why should the public purse have to foot the bill for incompetence. A quick check with Fife Mitsubishi will confirm this.

they arent carbon free vehicles though. the electricity which they use for charging comes from power stations which erm... PRODUCE CARBON. its about time we stopped worrying about electric cars and carbon output and do what china does and have a booming economy - create jobs not taxes.

For info; the impractical little Mitsubishi i-MiEV takes 7hrs to fully recharge, has a range of "up to 93 miles" *aye, right!* and carries the unbelievable price tag of "FROM £28,990 less a £5k Gov't plug-in grant." How may cheaper diesel cars would that figure allow Dundee council to buy - eh?

I'd be interested in seeing how many vehicles are in the fleet and what they are used for. Then, based on this info, see how many can be eliminated by having folks take the bus. What? Taking the bus isn't convenient? Well...join the rest of us!

under an FOI request the council stated the vehicles they have only do 4000 miles a year.. i think that figure was based on 4 vehicles.

There is also a Dundee company that develops the batteries for these electric cars, perhaps the council needs to talk to them. If used properly these vehicles can get the full range, and if they are only used for driving round Dundee there should not be any issue.

Sadly we'll spend many billions on useless electric cars and windmills before the global warming scam is finally killed off.

@bob Global warming isn't a scam. The controversy is entirely media created and led. It suits politicans (and more importantly their financial backers, the lobbyists) to pretend that there is not overwhelming consensus among scientists about global warming.
