National Express Dundee wants to introduce the route in May to try to profit from the city's night-time economy.

Phil Smith, director of National Express Dundee, said the new weekend service will be trialled through the summer and, if successful, could be made permanent.

''We're working on a product that will provide late-night bus facilities in the city from the spring of this year,'' he said. ''We're aiming to cater for late-night and early-hours revellers and people that want to take advantage of the nightlife the city has to offer.

''You will see a night service of some type operating during the summer months.''

The plan has not yet been registered with the traffic commissioner, but negotiations have taken place with with the trade union over the working procedures.

The late-night buses will follow a route to the city centre. That is expected to run from Broughty Ferry to a point near to the Grosvenor Casino in Dundee.

However, Mr Smith refused to confirm any details.

01.50pm - 17.02.2012  Maryfield Resident - Dundee, Scotland    Report This

This overdue action should have been taken years ago to stop the anti social behaviour that occurs when revellers stumble home at 4am, waking everyone up with their singing and shouting. How many bins have been kicked into the street & bus stops smashed because these idiots drink up their taxi fare?

05.44pm - 17.02.2012  forfar resident - forfar, United Kingdom    Report This

Maryfield resident, the people who drink their taxi fare are probably just as likely to spend their bus fare. But it may help get people home who otherwise would struggle to get a taxi or have a long wait. Just wish they'd put one on from dundee to forfar.

Does Maryfield resident then think that because revellers stumble off a bus they won't kick bins over and cause other such disturbance, this is a ludicrous suggestion

06.59pm - 17.02.2012  James Kinmond - Dundee, UK    Report This

To have such a service is ridiculous, who is to say that people who cause such destruction will not cause such offenses on the bus service and also this service is not door to door so therefore can still cause disruption in the street, also what about DRIVER SAFETY and risk of buses being damaged!!!

Good news! I used the University of Dundee nght bus while studying there. This is going to increase safety, reduce the risks taken by people a bit worse for wear walking across the city. Btw-any reason for the picture of womens legs? Why not a drunk man?

Would not like to be the bus driver.

Can't wait to see the You-tube videos from this bus - bound to be some classic moments.

Well having it run over the summer will not be a true reflection on the amount of people who would use the bus. If anything they should test it during the University terms as there is an increase in population in Dundee at that time of the year

06.55pm - 19.02.2012  Kat - Dundee, Scotland    Report This

@James Kinmond - what makes you think everyone who wants a late-night bus service will cause destruction? I've never done such a thing in my life and I'm fed up of having to leave a night out at 11.30 to get the last bus home (either that or drive and not have anything to drink).

02.06pm - 20.02.2012  Clare - Dundee, Scotland    Report This

I think that Dundee is long over due a night bus service. Services such as these have been running in Glasgow and Edinburgh for years and they work well. Yes there are going to be instances when things are going to get rowdy on the bus, but this happens regardless of whether people are druk or sober
