Public can't spend a penny in city council's new £36 million HQ

Following a complaint from a constituent about a lack of a public toilet at the city council headquarters, West End councillor Fraser Macpherson has been trying to flush out the reason.
Council chief executive David Dorward told him: ''The only toilets available are disabled, and access to these toilets is gained through a security door. Reception staff must escort any disabled member of the public to these toilets for security reasons.
''There is no general public toilet provision. However, in an emergency the reception staff will allow the use of the disabled toilet. The reception staff do allow use by the elderly and young children.
''I have asked the city development department to put up signage advising the public of the disabled toilet facility, and that these can be accessed by approaching the reception staff.''
Mr Macpherson said: ''Given that the Dundee public paid for the headquarters to be built, it would have been a whole lot better if the Dundee public had been given some consideration.
''I do think the city council can do better than this.''

Or the public could just walk 30 seconds down the road and use the public toilets in the Overgate.

Just how close are the Overgate toilets ? I think the council should be congratulated on saving money by not employing extra cleaning staff. This is a no story.

The entire building has the feel of a SOVIET government office. DCC, it's 2012 not 1912. Where are all the services we paid for?
12.39pm - 20.02.2012 Stewart - Dundee, UK Report This
Why should the council provide public toilets? There is no reason for them to be there. Well done DCC, the building is in the city centre where there already lots of toilets.

@Stewart, Clearly U have never been IN Dundee House which has DCC's Customer Services on the bottom floor. U want folk who pay council tax to go down to get advice, DCC forms, ect, stand in the service queues BUT then take their children outside to use a toilet? A public building has public services

I've been in quite a few times for various reasons, if the council built toilets people would moan, if they don't certain people still moan. If you can't hold your bladder for 30 minutes then pay online and save everyone the hassle.

@Stew once again, U have shown us the light so lets ban all public toilets for all these LAZY taxpayers, in fact why stop there, lets ban Police/Fire protection for weak taxpayers who can't stand being harmed for more then 30 min & cut out all that costly NHS help 2, folk can look up remedy's online

Did the old building have toilets? Do many of the other Council's buildings have public toilets? The answer is simply no. There are toilets a small distance away. Since when did people require to be spoon fed for everything. If you can't hold it in, you shouldn't be allowed out the house.
