'Lowest of the low' — lord provost furious after second theft from pensioner in a week

Dundee Lord Provost John Letford says the man who burst past an 84-year-old disabled woman in her home and stole her handbag containing a significant three-figure sum of money is "scum".

The despicable crime happened on Sunday morning in Clement Park Place, a street in Mr Letford's Lochee ward. It was the second of its type in a week after two men tricked their way into a 69-year-old man's home in Fleming Gardens North last Tuesday and also stole a three-figure amount of cash.

''I absolutely despair when I hear of these things,'' said Mr Letford. ''The people who commit these acts are despicable. They're scum — the lowest of the low. There is no other way to describe someone who preys on defenceless, vulnerable people. They are the lowest form of human life that crawls out of a rock from time to time.

''I urge anyone who knows who did this awful thing to this old lady to come forward with information to the police so that the perpetrators can get their just deserts.''

The frail 84-year-old disabled woman answered the door of her Clement Park Place home to what she believed was a workman between 11 and 11.30am on Sunday. The scruffy caller wearing a high-visibility jacket waved a piece of paper in front of her before brushing by and going into her home.

She made an attempt to stop him as he went inside, but he found her handbag, grabbed it and left. He then left the area in a rusty white van being driven by another man.

As well as a high-visibility jacket, the caller wore a dark floppy hat that appeared to have floppy ears or flaps at the side. He had a fair to auburn beard.

He had earlier been seen in the street, directing the van into a space between cars.

The driver of the van was aged about 30 and had dark unkempt hair. He wore a sleeveless high-visibility jacket.

The householder, although extremely distressed, was uninjured.

Anyone with information should call 0300 111 2222, or speak to any police officer.

Its a sad fact that these days there a more and more of these scumbags hiding amongst the crowds of really good and decent people. It's time we took our communities back, look out for the elderly and vulnerable, be neighbours again, and stand up to criminals and anti social thugs.
