The youngster, whose brain tumour latterly stopped her from walking and talking, had been in hospital after her condition deteriorated, and on Wednesday evening came the sad news that she had died.
The tragedy was confirmed by Gowriehill Primary School janitor Tam McGeary, who had co-ordinated a fundraising appeal for Madison.
He said: ''We're all shattered. I've spoken to her mum Lyndzay and although they knew it was coming it doesn't make it any easier. She was a smashing wee girl and she's stopped suffering now.
''It's going to be really hard at the school. There will be a lot of very sad young kids there.''
Mr McGeary took charge of a campaign in the Menzieshill area to raise funds for treats for Madison, and the community rallied round. A total of £18,000 was raised, and the cash was used to take Madison and her family to Disneyland Paris and provide a Christmas party and other happy occasions.
The money was raised in sponsored walks, band nights, karaokes and by local pupils plus staff at Tesco South Road. A cheque for £500 was received from the sergeants' mess at 45 Commando, RM Condor.
There were plans to lay on more enjoyment for Madison, but her condition took a turn for the worse.
The Madison Barclay Appeal Facebook page was inundated with comments as soon as the news broke.
Hundreds of messages were left, including many from her young friends at school along with complete strangers who had been touched by her plight.
Valerie Lynch said: ''My little niece has gone to be an angel and be with her gran who will love her, cherish her and care for her in heaven until she is reunited with her family in time. R.I.P little one you are now pain free.''
Sarah Hughes said: ''R.I.P Little Madison, thinking of all your family at this very sad time.''
Wendy Forbes said: ''Such sad news :( Thoughts are with all the family. I am relieved she is pain free now poor little angel. R.I.P.''
Emily Waterson added: ''R.i.p. Madison we will miss you so much but you will always be in our heart.''
Madison was born with a rare and aggressive brain stem glioma tumour, and her parents Lyndzay and Robert Barclay were told that their little girl was unlikely to live beyond nine months.
They made the difficult decision not to tell Madison so they could enjoy their time together.
