Former PM Gordon Brown backing Remploy

Gordon Brown has expressed his support for Remploy workers facing the axe following a recent review.

The Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath MP has written to disabled people minister Maria Miller urging her to look carefully at the strengths of the Remploy model and to support its factories.

Thousands of jobs could be at risk if the UK's Remploy factories, which include the ones in Cowdenbeath and Leven, shut down.

Mr Brown said: "The Remploy model is best illustrated by the success of the Cowdenbeath Remploy factory, and must remain part of any future planning for supported employment.

"I am a regular visitor to Remploy in Cowdenbeath and I have always been bowled over by the commitment of the staff and very impressed by the quality of its work.

"The staff meet the highest quality standards and export to many countries overseas."

He added: "I have always applauded and continue to applaud

the team spirit which gives Remploy such a good working atmosphere and contributes to its success.

"I want a reassurance that the current Remploy model, albeit it with adjustments, will remain a part of any future planning for supported employment.''

The backing comes just days after Fife Council gave cross-party support to a motion by Rosyth councillor Douglas Chapman calling on the region's MPs to do what they can to protect disabled workers at both threatened Fife sites.
