A92 called one of Britain's worst roads

A farmer who lives near the scene of Sunday's fatal accident on the A92 in north-east Fife has branded the road one of the worst in Britain.

Andrew Mylius, of St Fort Estate, near Newport, called for the trunk road to be upgraded to a dual carriageway.

He also wants slip roads created at farm accesses like his own, which is directly opposite the entrance to another farm.

Fintry Primary School teacher Lorna Grant died after her Renault Clio collided with a Volvo people carrier on the A92 between the Five Roads and Forgan roundabouts.

Five children and a woman in the Volvo were rushed to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.

The busy road is a single carriageway north of Glenrothes and south of the Forgan roundabout.

Mr Mylius said he and his family had grave concerns about safety.

He said, "It is one of the worst roads in Britain. There has been a noticeable increase in traffic between Kirkcaldy and Dundee in the last five years.

"It's not necessarily the speed of the vehicles, it's the sheer volume and the fact we are on a bend.

"People travelling south tend to be speeding up when they come round a corner and meet traffic turning in and out of the farm."

Sunday's accident was one of three on the A92 in recent days.

On Monday a driver was taken to Ninewells with a shoulder injury after a three-car collision between Rathillet and the Luthrie junction and, a week before, Methil man George Izatt (54) died in a head-on crash near Luthrie.

I have to agree with the farmer that it is NOT the speed of the vehicles as such, i.e. excessive speed but more the amount of traffic. I drive this road regularly and I agree that it needs to be dualled throughout. However I bet they will use the accidents as an excuse to put up a speed camera.

A speed camera would be be decent start

Speed cameras are a waste of time and if the government thought for a minute that it would earn them any money there would already be speed cameras in place. The road is dangerous whether it's because your stuck behind farm traffic or Sunday drivers. It most definitely needs to be dual carriageway.

Will Transport Scotland and our Scottish Government now begin improvements to the A92 in Fife following these deaths? I believe this is one of the criteria for trunk roads' improvement.

Traffic counts are available on the Transport Scotland website.
The A92 from Forgan to Glenrothes shows as being below 10000 vehicles per day, which is well below the recommended traffic flow for a dual carriageway.

Dangerous Road? How could a road be dangerous?
Shouldn't we be looking at the abilities of the people using the road?

03.29pm - 06.09.2010 Colin Reid - Newport on Tay, UK Report This

As someone who uses the road daily it's the speed / type of the traffic using it and not fast speed.
The amount of HGV’s (that are only aloud to go 40mph max) and farm traffic makes for some very long and very slow journeys, resulting in drivers overtaking on very short bits of road.

Lets face it, if people drove to the highway code by the letter there would never be any accidents!
