An Association of Chief Police Officers Scotland (ACPOS) spokesman said the officers had been drawn from all eight Scottish forces.
He said, "We can very much assure communities that the force will continue to operation as normal in Scotland — it will be business as usual."
He added, "The situation is being constantly monitored between ACPOS and colleagues in England and any further assistance required will be given careful consideration.
Scotland Office minister David Mundell said, "I welcome the fact Scottish police forces will be deployed to help assist other UK forces.
"We need to band together in times of adversity and many Scottish families will be worried about the safety of relatives and friends living in London and other English cities.
"It is a good example of the UK banding together and putting resources where they are needed, and times like this show the values we share across the UK rather than the differences between us."
First Minister Alex Salmond said Scotland has an "obligation" to help where it can.
