With fuel burning such a big hole in wallets and purses, it is hardly surprising that the Energy Saving Trust is encouraging people to take more care when they get behind the wheel.
As part of its campaign, a ''fuel efficient driver'' session was held in Dundee this week to pass on tips about keeping costs down.
Spokesman Ian Murdoch said: ''Fuel-efficient driving not only leaves you with more cash in your pocket but also a smaller carbon footprint. It's amazing how much people can save in fuel and money by adopting a slightly different driving technique.''
Participants were taken out by a driver instructor on two trips — one before the lesson and one after — to see the impact of what they have learned.
The trust reckons the average driver could cut up to £300 a year from their fuel bill. Its top tips include shifting to higher gear as soon as possible, driving at a steady speed and easing off the accelerator rather than last-second braking.
Keeping your speed down can also have a big impact — you use 10% less fuel at 50mph than at 70mph.

Try telling my Mrs that! .. Even simple things like block changing down eg 5th to 2nd on approach to lights, junctions etc also helps a lot.
