Help The Courier fight threat to RAF Leuchars
Under-threat air base RAF Leuchars appeared to have been spared when the coalition government outlined its planned defence cuts last month.

But just six weeks later it has emerged that the base is once again in the firing line and speculation is growing that it could be axed as an alternative to RAF Lossiemouth in Moray or RAF Marham in Norfolk.
This is despite the base being prepared as the home of the first of three new Eurofighter squadrons and responsible for maintaining air security over northern Britain.
Not only does RAF Leuchars still play an important military role, it is also a key contributor to the north-east Fife economy — an issue The Courier explored in full before details of the Strategic Defence and Security Review were revealed last month.
Over the next few days, The Courier will once again champion the base and why it must be retained.
And we need your help to fight Leuchars' case. Please have your say by commenting on articles, emailing courier@dcthomson.co.uk or by calling 01382 575291.

Rather than closing down all the Scottish bases why can't the split be made more equal and England take the hit?!?!?!?! The closure of the airbase would have a huge impact on the village itself which the government don't seem to appreciate!!

The emphasis is on money, with MOD spending crazily on the carriers, Leuchars and the RMs at Condor. To lose one large base therefore is consequential to the plan. Some cynics may suggest that Leuchars will stay because of the golfing at St. Andrews. You may laugh, but it has happened before!!

RAF Leuchars is stategically placed to meet a threat from Russia and other hostile nations. It is vitally important this base is retained for the defence of our country.D.Cameron should remember this is his governments first prioity.
