A number of caravans and vehicles arrived at the car park of an empty office building at Broxden Business Park on the outskirts of Perth at the weekend.

Although there were traffic cones marking the entrance to the site, the travellers set up a temporary camp there.

The move angered Councillor Alexander Stewart, leader of the Conservative group on Perth and Kinross Council and a member of Perth South ward.

He said some of his constituents had branded the travellers' encampment as a "blot on the landscape".

Previous efforts were made in Perth to prevent such encampments taking place, including barriers on land at Auld Bond Road.

On Wednesday, Mr Stewart expressed his delight that the travellers encampment had moved on.

"I would like to thank all those who participated in ensuring this was handled swiftly and sensitively," he said. "I now intend to write to the property owners to request that they secure the entrance to their car park more effectively to prevent a recurrence of this situation.

"However, I would ask that local residents be vigilant as there are a number of locations in the area which could be vulnerable in the future due to the nature of the open landscape."
