Onlookers described how the ferocious blaze engulfed the Ford Fiesta abandoned above Junction 6 of the M90, sending thick smoke down to the busy carriageway below.
The emergency services were notified of the incident shortly after 2.45pm on Wednesday.
Police secured the area around the vehicle, ensuring no traffic could pass, while crews from Perth Fire Station fought to extinguish the fire.
No one was injured. Traffic on the slip road was at a standstill for around 20 minutes.
Courier reader Andrew Pearce sent in a dramatic image of the blaze.
He said: ''The flames were huge — I haven't seen anything like it for more than 20 years.
''The driver looked shaken but uninjured. He was standing at the side of the road, well away.''
Commuters travelling south on the M90 also faced lengthy tailbacks when a lorry jack-knifed on Balmanno Hill at 5pm.
