The details of the visit have yet to be revealed but it has emerged the Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, will come to Perth in early July.
The Perth official visit — the only scheduled stop in Tayside or Fife — is one of a handful being undertaken in Scotland with Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dunbartonshire and Renfrewshire also on the itinerary.
The visits are seen as a way of the Queen expressing her thanks to people throughout the country for their support and loyalty.
Among those welcoming the news was Provost John Hulbert, who said: ''I am delighted to hear the news. I have no doubt the people of Perth and Kinross will come out in force to give the Queen a warm welcome on what will be a very special day.''
Many hope the announcement of the visit is a positive omen for Perth's bid for city status, a competition organised as part of the diamond jubilee celebrations and an honour which lies in the hands of the Queen.
As part of Perth's celebrations of the jubilee, civic heads of towns and cities twinned with Perth will be invited to join in events in June.
The Perth stop is part of a mammoth nationwide tour which begins in Leicester in March and takes in every corner of the United Kingdom.
