Positive Weather Solutions — who blamed the Met Office for raising our expectations and leaving us disappointed with last year's washout — say this week's upturn is the start of a scorcher.

Chief forecaster Jonathon Powell said, "Temperatures are climbing steadily this week and around 20 to 21C is possible in the north, with decent spells of dry and brighter weather.

"This is summer's first salvo and we expect high pressure to anchor down."

He added, "That means that after this week's fine weather, the following week will also be dry and warm.

"The dry and sunny weather may well stay with us into June."

Positive Weather Solutions base their predictions on weather patterns and long-term cycles and believe this year's extreme winter —the coldest for 31 years — could lead to a stretch of summer sunshine.
