Tayside Police halts job applications — for now

The number of people applying to join Tayside Police has been so great that the force has had to stop accepting them for the time being.

The recruitment stall — which also applies to Lothian and Borders and Central Scotland Police — is in place because the number of applicants far outweighs the number of posts available.

A force spokeswoman said that with the retirement rate slowing there were simply fewer places for new officers in the ranks.

She said, "Due to the current reduction in the recruitment requirements for Central Scotland, Lothian and Borders and Tayside police, and the high number of applications that have been received, no further applications for police constables will be accepted by these forces at present.

"Any changes to this position will be notified on the appropriate section of the relevant force website."

She added, "Central Scotland Police, Fife Constabulary, Lothian and Borders Police and Tayside Police are currently running a shared recruitment service pilot where all applications to these forces will be processed at the Scottish Police College."

The spokeswoman could not confirm whether another recruitment window would open later this year but said the situation was being "constantly monitored."

In early June the force said they were still recruiting new faces but warned that the situation may change as budgets are expected to come under strain later this year.
