A Dundee City Council spokesman said it "sincerely regrets" the situation, adding, "This decision was not taken lightly and interments will be resumed as soon as possible."

A funeral planned for Thursday at Parkgrove Crematorium, Friockheim, was postponed at the bereaved family's request. Dundee Crematorium reported no problems getting access there.

Funeral directors said some families had requested postponements due to travelling difficulties for mourners.

Across Tayside undertakers are making valiant efforts to ensure funerals take place, bringing in diggers to clear access routes and using 4x4 vehicles to collect snowed-in ministers due to conduct services.

Lindsay Martin, a funeral director at Selwoods in Carnoustie, said his main worry now was scarcity of fuel for his vehicles.
