Thousands of people thronged the streets on April 14 to watch the annual parade organised by the university club, which is seen as one of the highlights of the town and gown calendar.

RNLI Reindeer Run at Glamis Castle

Hundreds of people gathered in Glamis on November 20 for the Angus stage of the RNLI Reindeer Run fundraiser.

A drizzly start to the 10km run at 10.30am gave way to perfect conditions for the 5km at 11.30am.

Around 200 people ran the 10km, with a lesser contingent running 5km.

Music for Youth's Perth Concert Hall Prom

Perth Concert Hall was a riot of sound and colour as 1,000 youngsters came together for an inspirational day of music and dance on October 28.

The Perth Prom was the launch event for Music for Youth's arrival in Scotland.

The charity has introduced tens of thousands of youngsters in England and Wales to music in recent years and, in partnership with Creative Scotland's Musical Youth Initiative, it will stage events across Scotland over the next three years.

They will particularly target young people who would not normally engage in music activities.

The Perth concert was performed by young people for young people, providing first hand experience of live music-making.

140 young musicians aged 11-21 from across Scotland took to the stage including The Gordon Duncan Experience from Perth and Kinross, Drake Music Scotland and Kilpatrick School from West Dunbartonshire and The National Youth Choir of Scotland Stirling Area Choir.

Dundee Cyclathon 2011

Around 500 cyclists raised an estimated £35,000 for charity at the Dundee Cyclathon on September 11.

The cyclists, who ranged from children to an 81-year-old, made a colourful sight as they set off from Camperdown Park to negotiate the city's Green Circular cycle route.

RAF Leuchars Air Show 2011

Aviation enthusiasts arrived in their thousands at RAF Leuchars for another spectacular air show on September 10.

Iconic aircraft through the ages, from the Vulcan to state-of-the-art Typhoons, soared over Fife.

This year's event was a celebration of old and new to mark 100 years of the RAF at Leuchars.

There was an especially warm welcome for the Red Arrows aerobatic display team, after they tragically lost pilot Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging in a crash in Bournemouth in August.

In a show of professionalism, the team resumed public displays in time for Leuchars and their display was a highlight of the programme.

Dundee Half Marathon 2011

A record number of runners took part in the Dundee Half Marathon on July 17.

The winners were Colin McGill from Edinburgh, who finished in one hour 17 minutes in the senior men's section, and Charlotte Fortune from Bo'ness who crossed in a time of one hour 33 minutes.

'Psycho' Dave Bowman walks over hot coals in fund-raiser

He is used to pressure but legendary Dundee United club captain Dave Bowman looked almost as if he had finally met his match during a daring walk over hot coals on July 15.

Money raised during the unusual fund-raiser, at the Gibson House care home in St Andrews, will be spent on the provision of outings and much needed new equipment at the Fife care home.

Dolphin rescue on the River Tay

The Courier was on hand to record every step of the journey as a dolphin stranded at Perth was released into open water at the mouth of the River Tay off Buddon Point on May 19.

Tayside Police, Tayside Fire and Rescue's water rescue unit, British Divers Marine Life Rescue, the Shanwell Wildlife Rescue Trust and the RNLI's Broughty Ferry lifeboat were all involved in a complex but ultimately successful operation to save the animal.

The Courier wishes to thank everyone involved for allowing us access to witness a hugely impressive team effort.

Chariots Of Fire charity run at St Andrews

Ladies' Day at Perth Racecourse

Glitz and glamour triumphed over gusts and showers as the changeable weather failed to deter ladies from getting their glad rags on at Perth Racecourse on May 12.

Rather than being awash with rain, the popular venue was a sea of pink as racegoers battled to win the prize for best outfit in that colour.

There was also a cheeky element to the day, with the racecourse offering a Pretty In Pink package as part of the ongoing partnership with Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Ladies were invited to indulge themselves in a pink-themed marquee where they were served by scantily-clad waiters.

The flamboyance continued throughout the event with the traditional ladies day titles of best dressed lady and best hat.

There were also several outdoor catwalk fashion shows courtesy of Phase Eight, which exhibited its summer collection.

There was also ample opportunity for visitors to enjoy a flutter, with seven races taking place throughout the day.

The royal wedding may have taken place some 465 miles away in Westminster, but nowhere were the celebrations more heartfelt than in St Andrews, where Prince William and Kate Middleton met.

Up to 2000 wellwishers gathered at St Salvator's quadrangle in the heart of the town to enjoy a host of entertainment -- including a slap-up breakfast -- prior to watching the nuptials on a huge outdoor screen.

Kate Kennedy Parade fun in St Andrews

Thousands of people lined the streets of St Andrews on April 16 for the Kate Kennedy Parade.

The historical pageant, which marked its 85th anniversary, featured over 100 characters in colourful costume.

Organised by the student Kate Kennedy Club in aid of local charities, the procession depicts the people and events shaping the history of St Andrews over the centuries.

It purports to herald the start of spring and is a symbol of youth and of hope.

The central figure is the niece of the founder of St Salvator's College, Lady Katherine Kenned — who appeared in an open horse-drawn carriage decorated with hundreds of daffodils.

Kate Kennedy is traditionally portrayed by a first-year club member, and this year it was Edward Battle from London.

The other characters included Robert the Bruce, Mary Queen of Scots and even John Cleese.

Scottish Cup: Dundee United v Motherwell

Dundee United and Motherwell met in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup on March 13.

John Sutton grabbed a brace for the visitors, but United kept up their defence of the trophy by twice coming back to claim a 2-2 draw.

But the game will be remembered for only one thing — United striker David Goodwillie's stunning overhead kick.

WinterWeek+ fun at the Scottish Crannog Centre

One of Highland Perthshire's most popular visitor attractions has been trying out its first winter season.

As part of the WinterWeek+ celebrations at Kenmore, the Scottish Crannog Centre opened to the public two months early.

Among the activities taking place at the centre, which is a full-sized replica of an iron age crannog, is the chance to find out how people lived thousands of years ago.

Courier photographer Kim Cessford was there as visitors were invited to live the life of an extended family from that era by learning how they processed food, cooked, lit fires, spun and weaved their own clothes and hunted prey by throwing spears.

Schools' cross-country at Perth Racecourse

Youngsters from all over Perth and Kinross gathered at Perth Racecourse on February 15 for the annual Primary Schools' Cross-Country Championships.

P6 and P7 pupils competed in both boys and girls races and there were a variety of individual and schools medals up for grabs. Smaller rural schools also competed in their own race.

The primary races were followed in the afternoon by a number of cross-country events for secondary pupils.

Bell Rock Lighthouse Year of the Light fireworks

A rainbow of colours lit up the sky in Arbroath as people from across Angus and beyond turned out to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Bell Rock lighthouse on February 1.

It marked exactly 200 years since the first beam of light was emitted from the lighthouse, and was the start of 12 months of Year of the Light-themed celebrations.

Cairn O'Mohr Winery's inaugural 'ploughed field sprint'

The Perthshire winery that brought the world a bottle smashing championship and all manner of exotic local tipples has invented a new sport "to raise a laugh at a dreary time of year."

Cairn O'Mohr held its inaugural 'ploughed field sprint' on January 29, with a Golden Haggis prize up for grabs.

Dookers start new year with a splash

An inspirational figure to her local running community, city and country, she raised many thousands of pounds for charity in a long and busy life.

Here we present some of the photos we have been sent of this morning's lunar eclipse.

A lunar eclipse takes places when the moon passes through the earth's shadow.

Today's eclipse took place on the winter solstice — the shortest day of the year — the first time this has happened since 1638.

It was a difficult event to photograph so congratulations to all who succeeded.

St Andrew's Day of Dance in Perth

More than 900 children took to the floor in the Bells Sports Centre, Perth, to show off their best steps for the St Andrew's Day of Dance.

Primary schools throughout the region have been practising a selection of dances as a fitting celebration of Perth 800.

Music was provided by the Jim Berry Trio and there were demonstrations of the Buttercup, which was the winning entry to the Devise a Dance Perth 800 competition.

St Andrews University Raisin Monday foam fight

Hundreds of students at St Andrews University braved the cold weather to enjoy a traditional foam fight in St Salvator's Quadrangle as a finale to the Raisin weekend celebrations.

The fun-filled weekend helps new students integrate more easily into university life and each first-year student, or bejant, is invited to join "a family" of senior students.

Newcomers present a gift to their guardians and in return receive a receipt, to be carried around for the rest of the day.

These receipts have included a canoe, a brass bed complete with a student reading a book, and even a bath.

Perth Christmas lights switch-on

Festive fun and frolics were on offer in Perth as the Christmas lights were switched on.

Thousands enjoyed a day of entertainment, culminating in the traditional switch-flicking.

Local band Vortex and the Jambouree Choir provided an accompaniment while stilt walkers and jugglers performed.

There was excitement as Santa entered his grotto in St John's Shopping Centre, giving out presents and taking time to discuss wish lists. He led a procession ahead of the switch-on by Provost John Hulbert.

Helping out were characters from Perth Theatre's festive panto Aladdin.

Dundee Christmas lights switched on

A large helping of Christmas spirit was sprinkled on Dundee as more than 25,000 people turned out to see the city's lights switched on.

The peal of church bells signalled the beginning of the night's festivities on November 19, followed by a torchlight procession led from the McManus Galleries by Lord Provost John Letford and — of course — Santa.

RNLI Reindeer Run at Glamis Castle

It may still be November, but over 300 runners got into the Christmas spirit for the RNLI's Reindeer Run at Glamis Castle on November 21.

Participants wore antlers and ran in the 10k or 5k event. There was also a 2.5k Santa Saunter for those brave enough to compete in full Father Christmas costume.

The RNLI's Richard Smith said the races had raised between £6000 and £8000.

Scottish Dance Theatre at Dundee Rep

The Scottish Dance Theatre stepped out with two performances at Dundee Rep on November 16.

The troupe performed NQR, a collaboration between SDT artistic director Janet Smith, dance agent for change Caroline Bowditch and assistant director Marc Brew.

They also presented The Life and Times of Girl A, choreographed by Ben Duke from dance company Lost Dog.

The two performances were to be repeated on November 18.

On November 17, SDT performs Backstage Pass, a journey through the backstage areas of the Rep for close encounters with dance.

Featuring shorter works, the show is for anyone with an interest in contemporary dance.

Roller derby: Fair City Rollers v Dundee Destroyers

A team of Dundee's finest roller derby skaters visited their local rivals in Perth at the weekend — and returned home with a win under their belts.

A large crowd at Bells Sports Centre saw the home side's Fair City Rollers Fear Maidens take on Dundee Destroyer's Rippin' Kittins, in what was the first bout to be played in Perth.

The Dundee side emerged victorious with a score of 161 to 80.

Show of strength for Dundee FC

Thousands of fans turned out in force to support beleaguered Dundee FC at Dens Park on Saturday.

As the club continues to fight for survival after being handed a 25-point penalty for falling into administration, the Dark Blue faithful put on a show of strength by turning up in their droves for the 2-1 victory over Partick Thistle.

A red card protest made it clear what fans think of the SFL's treatment of the club.

Fireworks at Baxter Park, Dundee

A major power failure led to a delay of several minutes before Dundee's two fireworks nights displays got under way.

With minutes to go, a generator powering the Radio Tay outdoor entertainment unit at Baxter Park broke down, plunging the stage into darkness.

Radio Tay DJ Stuart Webster used a megaphone to inform the crowd of thousands there was a technical issue but assured everyone the Night At The Movies-inspired fireworks show would go ahead.

As the displays at Baxter Park and Lochee Park were due to be synchronised the decision was taken to delay both until 7.08.

A council spokesman apologised for the hitch and hoped the crowds had enjoyed the displays nonetheless.

Ladybank's Haig Memorial Garden rededicated

Ladybank men who fell in the first and second world wars were remembered at the village's refurbished Haig Memorial Garden on September 18.

A service was held to rededicate the garden to the fallen, following work by Ladybank Development Trust to improve the previously overgrown spot.

Among those attending the service, which was led by Rev Clifford Strong, were Countess Haig, wife of the third Earl Haig, Fife Deputy Lord Lieutenant Alison Halford McLeod, Sir Menzies Campbell MP and Fife provost Frances Melville.

Local schoolchildren, members of the army cadet pipes and drums and the Association of Scots Guards pipe band took part in a parade through the village.

Ladybank Development Trust thanked those who helped the project, including Voluntary Organisations North East Fife (VONEF).

Rowan Gorilla VII rig dominates skyline

When Dundee and the surrounding area woke up on Thursday, September 2, there was a new and striking fixture in the skyline.

The Rowan Gorilla VII had arrived around a week earlier but only when the platform was jacked up to 300ft did its true scale become clear.

And, as this gallery of readers' photos shows, many people's first reaction was to grab a camera and record the extraordinary sight of an offshore superstructure in an urban setting.

The rig, which can reach a maximum height of 550 feet, stands on three 400ft legs and has a huge derrick, a cluster of cranes and a helicopter pad.

It was off the coast of Angola, and is being prepared for a contract that will see it drilling at least three subsea wells in the North Sea's Bacchus field, close to the well-known Forties field.

From the archives: Freuchie cricket glory

Twenty-five years ago, Freuchie Cricket Club achieved a famous victory at Lord's when they beat Surrey side Rowledge to win the National Village Championship.

On September 1, 1985, the small club became the first from Scotland to win the competition, beating off 700 teams. More than 3000 fans had travelled to London and saw captain Dave Christie lift the trophy.

Europa qualifier: Dundee United v AEK Athens

European football returned to Tannadice for the first time in five years on August 19, but there was no fairytale for Dundee United.

Over 12,000 of the Tangerine faithful watched as their side suffered a 1-0 defeat against AEK Athens in their Europa League qualifier — leaving Peter Houston's men with an uphill task for the second leg in Athens.

Unicorn service for 65th anniversary of VJ Day

The bravery, dedication and sacrifices of those who fought for their country to help bring an end to the second world war were remembered in Dundee on Sunday, August 15.

More than 130 veterans, among them members of the half-million-strong "Forgotten Army" who fought to reclaim Burma from the Japanese, gathered at the Unicorn to mark the 65th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day.

Standards were paraded on the quayside before prayers led by chaplains the Rev David Taylor and the Rev Bob Wightman.

President of the Burma Star Association Donald Farquharson read the Kohima Epitaph and the president of the City of Dundee Combined Ex-Services Association Victor Herd read the Ode to the Fallen.

The veterans attended a reception aboard the frigate after the formal ceremonies.

Perth Highland Games

Local bands and pipers were joined in competition by a high-grade field, which included solo musicians and bands from as far afield as Canada and Australia. There were also excellent Highland dancing and heavyweight competitions, and all the usual family fun.

Live in the Den at Kirriemuir

Kirriemuir rocked to another Live in the Den weekend.

Top young musical talent from took to the open-air stage at the Angus beauty spot in front of a large crowd of all ages, which revelled in the opportunity to enjoy a day of free entertainment courtesy of DD8 Music.

Saturday delivered a bill strong on talent with well received performances from Make Sparks, Sonnet 65, The Trade and Emerald Sunday, among others.

Next up for DD8 is a Bon Scott weekend at the end of October.

The volunteers are also continuing work to convert the museum on Bellies Brae into a community space for musicians to take part in a range of activities.

Cortachy Highland Games

A bumper crowd, enthusiastic competitors and glorious weather combined to make Cortachy Highland Games an all-round winner on August 15.

The spectacular riverside setting opposite the Cortachy Castle home of Games Chieftain the Earl of Airlie was bathed in sunshine throughout the afternoon and the friendly atmosphere of the gathering once again helped it strike the perfect balance of fun for visitors and competitive rivalry in the main arena.

In the heavy events, regular names including David Dowson, Bruce Aitken and local Pete Hart fought out the honours.

David Laird of East Memus maintained his proud reputation in the fruit and vegetable sections with the best exhibit in each and the quality of the produce once again helped make the traditional end-of-games auction a big success.

Children's races and the annual dog show were also particularly well supported by locals and visitors to Angus — and the events concluded with the traditional duck race.

St Andrews Beach Volleyball Championships

Scotland's top beach volleyball players were at St Andrews West Sands over the weekend to do battle in the country's largest tournament.

Male and female competitors, some of whom travelled from abroad, took to the sands for the two-day tournament. The winners were presented with trophies by Scottish sculptor John McPhail.

Perth Agricultural Show

Thousands of people flocked to the Fair City on Friday as the Perth Show got under way.

Despite gloomy skies and sporadic heavy showers, visitors enjoyed the unique blend of town and country at the South Inch site, which is located just a few hundred yards from the town centre.

Organisers are anticipating an even bigger crowd for the second day, with well over 10,000 people expected to attend the event.

Now 148 years old, the show has been running within the town itself for over a century.

Originally a one-day event, it developed into a two-day extravaganza due to its popularity.

Glen Isla resounds to African drums

An Angus glens hamlet has again become an international cultural hotspot, with the setting up of its African drum village.

A decade after being established in an idyllic Glen Isla setting alongside Kirkton of Glenisla village hall, the event has again proved a major draw for musicians and visitors from across the globe.

Angus-based African drumming teacher Steve Haden established drum village, and he has watched it earn a reputation as one of the world's top festivals of its kind.

Musicians from the UK and many African nations will pass on their skills in a packed programme of workshops, which run until Saturday, with more than 300 visitors expected each day.

Arbroath West Links Family Fun

Residents and holidaymakers flocked to the West Links in Arbroath to enjoy the regular Tuesday afternoon summer family funtime.

Despite dark skies, the day stayed dry and warm and hundreds gathered to watch and join in the games and competitions — including traditional seaside favourites like bonny baby, totty toddler, Mr Muscles, Miss Beach Babe, marvellous mum and glamorous gran.

Even the plague of greenfly and the pong of decaying kelp on the seashore did nothing to dampen the spirits of those who were determine to enjoy themselves.

Glenisla Classic Vehicle Club's 10th anniversary

It began with half a dozen enthusiasts discussing their hobby over a pint in the pub — but 10 years on Glenisla Classic Vehicle Club has gone from strength to strength, and now has more than 60 members.

On Saturday club members and their families celebrated with a ceilidh at the Glenisla Hotel, followed on Sunday with a barbecue and vehicle exhibition.

Chairman George Smith said the club was purely for the enjoyment of the members and that it took an interest in all kinds of classic vehicles, from cars and vans to tractors.

He added, "The meetings are easy going and you don’t need to own a classic vehicle to join. We arrange days out to shows and family members are welcome to come, too."

Blair Atholl International Scouts Jamborette

Over 1000 scouts from all over the world have gathered at a picturesque corner of Perthshire for the Blair Atholl International Jamborette.

The tranquil grounds of Blair Castle have been transformed, with participants from 19 countries.

Around 1250 scouts and adults are taking part in the event, and Scottish scouts have been paired with counterparts from as far afield as Japan and Canada.

Also taking part are youngsters from far-flung countries including Namibia, Hong Kong and the USA.

A spokesman said, "This year Scottish Scouting has experienced its biggest growth in membership in over 50 years. The Jamborette helps to develop international scouting friendships while giving Scottish and overseas scouts the opportunity to take part in a range of adventurous activities and challenges."

Dalgety Bay pushkart derby

A little bit of Jamaican spirit was alive in Dalgety Bay on July 24 for the second pushkart derby.

Around a dozen home-made karts hurtled around a special course, all thanks to inspiration from the Jamaican bobsleigh team.

The inaugural 2009 event was voted a success and this year more competitors took on the course laid out in the grounds of the First Scottish Group's premises at St David's business park.

Last year the Bayside FC team won but were beaten this year by the Bayside Bullets — by three seconds.

Arbroath Seafront Spectacular

Culross summer fete and farmers' market

The sun shone on Culross summer fete and farmers' market on July 24.

Culross and Torryburn Church and Culross Development Trust worked in partnership this year to produce the event which was held on the village green.

In addition to the traditional stalls selling everything from home baking to jewellery, there was a wide range of farmers' stalls.

Radio West Fife provided music, and there were country craft demonstrations and entertainment for youngsters, as well as a regatta and raft race from Culross pier.

Perth hit by worst floods in years

Firefighters were scrambled from across Tayside on July 21 to help deal with the worst floods to hit Perth in many years.

Parts of the city woke up under water as a result of heavy overnight rain. Many town centre businesses and homes were badly affected, particularly those with cellars, while Fairfield housing estate was virtually cut off for hours.

Duke of Edinburgh gold awards presentation

Some of the new generation of young Duke of Edinburgh gold award recipients converged on the Palace of Holyroodhouse on July 16 to meet the duke and receive their certificates.

In two sessions, around 600 young people from all walks of life around Scotland, the north of England and Northern Ireland saw years of hard work recognised.

Each young person achieved their gold award after completing a diverse range of activities through five segments of the award-volunteering, physical, skills, expedition and a residential section.

Scottish Transport Extravaganza at Glamis Castle

A 1931 Royal Enfield motorcycle and a 1934 Jaguar SS open tourer were the stars among 1400 entries registered at the 36th Scottish Transport Extravaganza at Glamis Castle on July 10/11.

Vehicles of all kinds, from tractors to Rolls-Royces to Ford Cortinas, from 1890 to 1975, helped make the two-day programme one of the most successful.

"It was a bit damp on Saturday but Sunday has made up for it," said Alan Burt, chairman of Strathmore Vintage Vehicle Club.

"The crowds have been wonderful and we must be close to a record."

The event is firmly established as one of the biggest gatherings of its kind in Britain, and preparations for next year's event started a month ago.

T in the Park 2010 started with a bang as 70,000 campers partied to the sounds of Muse, Black Eyed Peas, Calvin Harris, Faithless and many more on Friday night.

Fans in fancy dress added to the atmosphere and the music began in the sunshine at 5pm.

That was all a bit unlikely after heavy rain through most of the day promised to spoil the party. But right on cue, the clouds parted, the sun shone through and Scotland's biggest live music festival was up and running.

T in the Park: Thursday

T in the Park has thrown open the gates to the first festival-goers.

Campers flooded into the Balado festival site on Thursday to the sound of bagpipes, and were the first of an eventual 85,000 arrivals who will enjoy global superstars such as Eminem, Jay-Z, Muse and Kasabian.

Dudley D. Watkins, Lord Snooty - and Hitler

The iconic artist, Dudley D. Watkins, took on a variety of characters over the years, but this comic strip — dug from the DC Thomson archives — is particularly fun.

Published in the Beano dated October 26, 1940 (according to a note on the back of the original art), it's part of how he did his bit for wartime morale.

In a wacky tale of propaganda, spying and hijinks, Lord Snooty and his chums get the better of none other than Adolf Hitler - with a little help from Gertie the goat.

The Fuhrer proves no match for the plucky pals, but seems to have caused the artist a few problems.

Below the last panel, an editor's note in pencil simply says, "Hitler's hair". A close look reveals the character's head has been whited out and redrawn.

It wasn't uncommon in wartime comics for characters to take on the Nazi enemy, but few have done it in such cheeky style as Snooty. Also, watch out for "Hermy" and even a Nazi spider!

Chillingly, Watkins' depictions of the Nazi leadership meant his name was on the Third Reich's list of people to be rounded up, apparently for execution, after the expected invasion of Britain. The editors of The Dandy and The Beano were also on the list.

Treasure from the archives: the gems of Dudley D. Watkins

The artist Dudley D. Watkins is an icon of Scottish culture — and his amazing talents are forever linked with DC Thomson.

From around 1925 until his death in 1969, Watkins provided thousands of beautiful images for comics, newspapers, books and more, gving life to unforgettable characters such as The Broons, Oor Wullie and Desperate Dan.

Here, for the first time, we present a gallery of his work, drawn from the huge DC Thomson comics archive. Much of it has not been seen since it was first printed, so many decades ago.

It shows the artist's range of work, in an expressive style which wasn't nearly as simple as it looks. In each case, the image is repeated without captions, to allow an insight into the creative process, with its changes, imperfections and notes.

It is also a chance to see different versions of some of the most famous characters "Watty" created, with very familiar faces from the Sunday Post.

Despite working in the often-overlooked medium of comics, Dudley Watkins is arguably the most recognisable artist in modern Scottish history, and he has a special place in so many hearts.

Dudhope Park open day

Dundonians gathered to discuss their vision for the future of Dudhope Park on July 3.

Dudhope Park Steering Group organised the open day so locals could share their views about what they want from the park and how to improve the facilities on offer.

Visitors took part in activities including football, basketball and dodgeball, animals lovers were treated to a dog training display, and children were invited to their very own teddy bears' picnic.

Skaters and BMX bikers were on hand to entertain with gravity-defying tricks in the skate park.

Locals also took the chance to reminisce when they brought along old photos of the park and shared memories.

British Superbike Championship at Knockhill

The very best of British bike racing came to Knockhill over the weekend of July 3/4 in the high-speed form of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship.

Michael Rutter took the win in the opening race of the sixth round of the championship at the weather-ravaged Fife track.

But the rain and wind proved too much for the second race, which was postponed to July 17 as part of the seventh round at Snetterton.

Armed forces parade in Dundee

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Dundee city centre on July 3 to pay tribute to the commitment and courage of the country's armed forces.

A military parade from St Andrew's Church to City Square was the centrepiece, with around 600 personnel from regular and territorial forces, veterans' associations and cadet forces taking part.

Onlookers of all ages broke into spontaneous applause and cheered loudly as three separate contingents of the parade passed by.

The salute was taken from a podium on Reform Street by Lord Provost John Letford; Brigadier George Lowder, new commanding officer of 51 (Scottish) Brigade, and Victor Herd, president of the Dundee Combined Ex-Services Association.

Campaign medals and veteran badges were presented during a ceremony in City Square in front of a large audience gathered in the sunshine.

Cupar Highland Games

Hundreds of spectators braved heavy showers to attend Cupar Highland Games on July 4.

A procession by Dunfermline District Pipe Band, chieftain Canon Pat McInally, past chieftains and games officials through the town centre marked the opening of the event in Duffus Park.

Although the sun came out at intervals, the downpours meant attendance was well below average.

Perth Day celebrates 800 years of the Fair City

Crowds filled the streets for Perth's 800th anniversary celebrations, grabbing every vantage point for a glimpse of the historic occasion.

The Earl of Wessex was the guest of honour for Perth Day, when more than 1000 people from the armed forces and youth organisations provided an unforgettable spectacle.

Among the impressive sights were The Black Watch, back to their spiritual home to honour its big day, and the Royal Marines of 45 Commando at Arbroath.

Veterans joined cadets for the parade, and of course The Courier was there to capture the occasion.

Ceres Highland Games

A large crowd packed in to Ceres Green on June 26 to enjoy Scotland's oldest free Highland games.

Hundreds flocked to the event, first held in north-east Fife almost 700 years ago, and chieftain and local MP Sir Menzies Campbell officially opened the games and presented awards.

There had been concern the skirl of the bagpipes would be absent this year due to a clash with a major piping competition but — after an appeal in The Courier with just weeks to go — the St Andrews and District Pipe Band saved the day by stepping in to perform.

The Highland games were held at the end of a "games week" which included a junior raft race, five-a-side football competition and a junior treasure walk.

The 34th games in the grounds of Drumtochty Castle followed up a record-breaking 2009 turnout with another big crowd attending the event near the village of Auchenblae.

Strathie Sharks rugby fun day

Visitors to Strathmore Rugby Club in Forfar on June 19 were invited to play their part in breaking an 18-year-old world record.

The club teamed up with the Strathmore Sharks for a joint crack at the record for the most consecutive rugby passes.

A total of 280 was there to beat but despite numerous attempts to break into the Guinness Book of Records, the efforts proved more fun than triumphant.

Young Euan Duguid (7), a pupil at Whitehills Primary and a member of the Strathmore Sharks Micros, threw the first pass under the watchful eye of dad and club coach-co-ordinator Murray and officials from the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU).

Early efforts provided chains of just 17, one and four passes as the ball fell to the ground with great regularity, amid much hilarity. A mixture of local rugby stars of all ages, coaches, youngsters, mums and dads gave it their best but the record remained unchanged at end of play.

Despite the disappointment there was still plenty to smile about thanks to a host of events organised to raise funds for the club.

Visitors enjoyed ferret racing, tug o' war, golf and football challenges, together with face painting and a bouncy castle. There was also touch rugby for all ages, while the sumo suits proved a huge hit.

And more than £250 was raised by club member Kevin Edmeades (40), who had his hair and prized beard shaved.

The club is hoping to use all the funds raised to support an SRU rugby development officer.

Cowdenbeath Gala Day parade

The sun shone down on the Cowdenbeath Gala Day parade on June 19.

The theme was Old Cowdenbeath and generations of families turned out to turn back the clock.

A colourful parade set off from Woodend Industrial Estate before heading along Broad Street to High Street and then on to the public park for an afternoon of traditional fun and games.

Race for Life 2010

Visitors to Camperdown Park in Dundee were greeted by a sea of fluorescent pink on June 20 as more than 3000 women limbered up for the 2010 Race for Life 5K event.

Just one of the many events taking place across the country, the Dundee runners in the 5K and the previous day's 10K races together raised around £230,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Some 1920s glamour was the order of the day as Monifieth Amateur Dramatics held a dress rehearsal for its latest show.

Two For The Tango, a comedy by Alister Faulkner, follows the adventures of two sets of estranged identical twins as they embark on a chaotic weekend in the Grand Hotel.

Touring the Scottish Police Services Authority forensics lab

The new £23.3 million police forensics lab in Dundee was officially opened on June 7.

Named Rushton Court after the late Dr Donald Rushton -- a pioneering forensic pathologist and one of the first to introduce the techniques to police work in Dundee -- the five-storey Scottish Police Services Authority (SPSA) centre was opened by Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill.

Girlguiding Fife centenary camp at RAF Leuchars

RAF Leuchars hosted 2000 girl guides from across Fife on June 5 as they celebrated 100 years of what is one of the largest and most popular youth movements in the world.

Girls and young women aged between five and 25 enjoyed a fun-filled day of activities including a bird of prey demonstration, a workshop on circus skills and a visit by the Kingdom FM roadshow.

The day also gave girls an insight into life in the forces, with a chance to see cooking in a field kitchen and getting put through their paces by a physical fitness instructor.

Girlguiding county commissioner for Fife Sue Walker said, "With 2000 people coming along to the event, it has taken a huge effort to get everything in place.

"All our adult members are volunteers and they have willingly given many hours of their time to make it a success.

"We are also very grateful to RAF Leuchars for allowing us to hold our special day at their base and helping us with organising everything."

The station commander at RAF Leuchars, Air Commodore Harry Atkinson, said the base is extremely pleased to be able to support the wider Fife and Girlguiding community.

"It is crucial that the station is an integral and active part of the local community, and I welcome the opportunity to give such a large number of young people a fun day out, and to give them an insight into RAF life," he said.

Markinch Highland Games

Fife's Highland games programme kicked off with the ever-popular Markinch Highland Games on June 6, with a healthy crowd turning up for the event.

Rangers and Scotland footballing legend Willie Johnston was given the honour of being chieftain for the games, which saw an action-packed afternoon of athletics, cycling and heavy events in John Dixon Park.

Mr Johnston, who lives in Kirkcaldy, spoke of his pride in taking up the role, following in the footsteps of the likes of actor Dougray Scott and rugby international Dave McIvor.

With the 40th anniversary of the Ibrox disaster — in which five boys from the town died — looming large in January, organisers thought it only appropriate to ask the former Rangers stalwart to carry out the chieftain's duties.

While the sporting events took centre stage, visitors were treated to the usual Highland dancing competitions, stalls and side shows, as well as the oldest pipe band contest in Scotland.

The event closed with around 20 bands taking part in the grand march past at the end of the afternoon, with Mr Johnston taking the salute of the massed bands.

Heart of Scotland Airshow

The Heart of Scotland Airshow attracted thousands of people to Perth Airport over the weekend of June 5-6, when vintage biplane flights for some of the crowd proved to be a big attraction.

This show celebrated a century of Scottish aviation and among a host of other attractions were the Breitling Wingwalkers, a Hawker Hurricane, a Supermarine Spitfire and numerous RAF planes and The Clan stunt cycle display team.

Aerial shots of Perth and Perthshire

Courier photographer Steve MacDougall enjoyed a flight in a de Havilland Dragon Rapide biplane over Perth and the surrounding area on June 3 during preparations for the Heart of Scotland Airshow.

The eight-seat de Havilland was built for the RAF in 1944 and is now one of just a handful flying in the world.

The airshow is celebrating a century of aviation, as well as the Perth 800 and 70 years since the Battle of Britain.

Atholl Highlanders' annual gathering

To the skirl of the pipes and the beating of drums, Europe's only private army underwent their annual inspection by the Duke of Atholl over the weekend of May 29-30.

Blair Castle provided a fitting backdrop as the Atholl Highlanders massed for the event, watched by hundreds of onlookers who had to huddle under umbrellas in torrential rain.

The army marched to the forecourt to parade before the duke in what traditionally marks the opening of the Atholl Gathering and Games, which proved a huge draw despite mixed weather.

Sun shines at Fife Show

It must be many years since Fife Show enjoyed such splendid weather as it did on Saturday, May 22.

By early afternoon the temperature was around 26C, ice cream sales were booming and down on the stock lines wet towels were being draped over the dairy cows and lightweight covers were being erected over sheep pens in an effort to keep off the sunlight.

Fife Agricultural Association president Allan Bowie was delighted to see the crowds pouring through the gates of the showfield at Kinloss House on the outskirts of Cupar.

"It has been fantastic," he said. "The car parks are full and more people than usual have arrived on foot from Cupar. We reckon the crowd is up 20% on usual.

There were extra attractions in place this year on an expanded site. East Fife Sports Council had a site to boost participation in all sports and competitive highland dancing made a return to the programme.

Knockhill hosts Motorfair: the Official Scottish Motorshow

The warm weather brought the crowds out in force at Knockhill for what was hailed as "one of the best" motorshows in recent years.

Organisers estimated that more than 15,000 visited the racing circuit over the weekend of May 22/23 for the Motorfair — the official Scottish Motorshow.

The large crowds were treated to a variety of events, including Pedro De La Rosa's Arrows F1 grand prix cars, stunt shows, the army's Golden Lions parachute display team and supercar track sessions.

Among the star attractions were the Alfa 8C and 8C Spider and Peter Vardy's Mini cow called Hamish.

Scotland basks in early summer sun

Scotland basked in the sun over the weekend of May 22/23 as the country was blessed with temperatures more akin to the Mediterranean.

Tayside sizzled on Saturday as the hottest temperatures of the year so far outstripped parts of the Med.

Sunday featured some heavy showers and hot sunshine on what was a scorcher of a weekend, when temperatures climbed to 26C — hotter than Turkey, Italy and Greece (23C).

Courier photographers were out across the area recording some of the events where people were making the most of the fine weather.

Highland Perthshire Cycling Festival's Big Day

A week of two-wheeled fun was brought to a spectacular end as the Highland Perthshire Cycling Festival enjoyed its Big Day in Aberfeldy on Saturday, May 15.

Opened by world champion Graeme Obree, the Victoria Park fun day featured stunt cyclists, workshops, demonstrations and the chance to try different types of pedal-powered transport.

Believed to be Scotland's largest cycling festival, the week included a determined effort by backers to take their love of bikes into schools and get youngsters involved in roadshows and competitions and setting up cycling clubs.

Organiser Emma Burtles said, "The festival has been really exciting this year with everything cycling coming to Highland Perthshire. It's been a great opportunity both for locals and visitors to have a go at cycling and to have fun with it.

"The roadshows, the competition, and in fact the whole cycling festival, aims to try to encourage more people to cycle."

Fraser's Dragoones at Edzell Castle

Edzell Castle echoed to the sound of musket fire when it was transported 360 years back in time to the days of Oliver Cromwell and the Roundheads.

The Fraser's Dragoones re-enactment group stopped off at Edzell Castle on Saturday and Sunday, May 15-16, to showcase the fascinating period of history surrounding the English Civil War and Cromwell's invasion of Scotland.

In 1650, the laird of Edzell was commissioned to raise a regiment for the Scots army to fight for the king against the English invaders under Oliver Cromwell.

An estimated 27,000 Dundee United fans headed to Hampden on May 15 to witness Peter Houston's men beat Ross County and claim the Scottish Cup for only the second time in the club's history.

It was a day blessed by perfect cup final weather and a great atmosphere between the teams' fans.

The team were then welcomed back to Dundee on Sunday with a reception in the City Square before meeting the fans back at Tannadice.

Whether they were at the game, watched on TV across the world, or came out to line the streets to cheer the team's success, it was a weekend that will live long in the memory for fans.

Perth shows gratitude to TA soldiers

The men and women of the 51st Highland, 7th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (7 SCOTS), strode proudly before the people of Perth on May 8 having been awarded the freedom of the city.

Hundreds lined the streets to honour the Territorial Army soldiers and applaud their courageous service in combat operations such as that in Afghanistan.

Dundee scrap yard fire consumes homes

Towering plumes of thick black smoke rose above the Coldside area of Dundee on May 9 as firefighters evacuated around 70 residents from their homes in one of the city's most ferocious blazes in recent years.

The fire began among a pile of cars and old skips at the Henderson Kerr scrap yard on Paterson Street and quickly grew out of control as emergency services rushed to the scene.

Courier photographer Kris Miller was quickly on the scene and captured some dramatic images.

St Andrews charity polo tournament

Polo players from as far afield as the US and Canada gathered at St Andrews' Strathtyrum Estate for a series of matches on May 3.

St Andrews University Polo Club held its annual charity tournament. Hundreds of spectators gathered to watch the play, which involved six club teams, one varsity match and a final exhibition match.

Committee member Allison Metcalf said the turnout had been fantastic and added, "It's been such a fantastic day and people have been so responsive to our chosen charity, Help for Heroes."

Dundee United have made provisional arrangements for an open-top bus tour and city centre reception should they lift the Scottish Cup on May 15.

As The Courier reported on Tuesday, the club's director of communications Derek Robertson was quick to stress the team are making no assumptions about victory, but said it is necessary to have plans in place.

All very reasonable and understandable.

We, however, decided it sounded like a good excuse to relive a magical day for the Tangerine half of the city when thousands came out on to the streets to congratulate United's cup-winning side on May 22, 1994 — the day after the 1-0 win over Rangers.

Ferrari owners' May run

More than a million pounds' worth of Italian exotica gathered in Angus as the Scotland North Ferrari Group set off on its annual May run.

The predominantly red sports cars convened at Brechin Castle before heading for Edzell to tackle the Cairn o' Mount.

From there, the convoy of 25 cars descended into Aboyne and headed west for a lunch stop at Balmoral Castle.

Their route then took them through Braemar and Glenshee before stopping at Dunkeld House Hotel for tea.

Courier photographer Kim Cessford — whose staff car, sadly, is not a Ferrari — was there to capture a red letter day for motoring enthusiasts.

International Horse Trials at Scone Palace

The annual Central Scotland International Horse Trials took place at Scone Palace. Competitions including dressage, show jumping and cross country, attracted national and international equestrian stars, together with a number of riders from the local area.

The event has a long association with Perthshire, which has staged the trials since 1950.

Plans to buy and renovate the former King's Theatre in Dundee were reported in The Courier this week.

Peter Murray Spencer, convener of the King's Theatre Company, said the group is seeking help from Creative Scotland and the Heritage Lottery Fund through Historic Scotland to cover the possible £20 million refurbishment cost.

Support are claiming the backing of high-profile figures including actor Brian Cox, TV personality Lorraine Kelly, writer and broadcaster Billy Kay and Dundee Lord Provost John Letford.

Prints of how the theatre looked around 100 years ago are being sold at the Eduardo Alessandro Studios in Broughty Ferry and the West End Gallery in Perth Roadto help raise funds.

Canoeist drowns at Grandtully

A young thrill-seeker died after he was thrown from his canoe while trying to tame some of the River Tay's most turbulent rapids on April 7.

The watersports enthusiast was negotiating a popular stretch of water at Lower Grandtully when disaster struck.

A dramatic rescue attempt was launched but the man could not be freed.

Hunter trials at Hallyburton, Coupar Angus

Some 60 years of hunter trials were celebrated at Hallyburton near Coupar Angus on April 5.

Organised by the Perth Hunt branch of the Pony Club, the event featured several classes.

Anstruther Easter duck race

A large crowd gathered at the Dreel Burn in Anstruther at Easter weekend to witness the annual plastic duck race.

The event, organised by members of the Anstruther Improvements Association as part of their charity drive, saw 1100 ducks tossed into the fast-flowing water as the race got under way.

Catchers positioned by the Dreel Bridge at the finish line had the difficult task of collecting all the ‘competitors' as they made their way downstream.

This was illustrated when dozens of ducks evaded the team, forcing members of the public — including, The Courier's very own intrepid photographer Kris Miller — to give chase.

Beinn A'Ghlo — The Hill of Mists

Beinn A'Ghlo (The Hill of Mists) is one of the most magnificent mountains in Perthshire.

However despite its western peak Carn Liath standing prominently above Blair Atholl when viewed from the A9, the full majesty of this great mountain is generally hidden.

One excellent viewpoint is the summit of Ben Vrackie behind Pitlochry, from where the whole twisting ridge can be seen.

The walk across the three Munros -- Carn Liath, Braigh Choire Chruinn-Bhaglain and Carn nan Ghabar -- is a long one. It calls for fitness, proper equipment and navigation skills -- as this hill can readily live up to its name.

However this a classic walk and the rewards are ample, not only can one discover the true character of this hill but there are sweeping views over the vast wildnerness around Glen Tilt which stretches north to the Cairngorms and east to Glen Shee.

It was a day of high energy and fun as almost 200 Angus school pupils enjoyed Scottish country dancing events, including a children's day of dance, at Montrose indoor sports centre this week.

Thursday's event was for cluster primary schools from Montrose, Brechin and Arbroath North.

More than 640 P5 to P7 pupils in Angus have taken part in the dancing programme organised by Active Schools, with help from Angus Scottish Country Dancing Society volunteers.

The commanding officer of Arbroath-based 45 Commando Group gave special access to Harden Troop this week, a unit for marines who have suffered and overcome terrible battlefield injuries.

Showing the spirit for which their unit is famed, they are determined to regain as much of their fitness as they can.

In Ralph Barnett's report, Lieutenant Colonel Oliver Lee spoke of his pride and humility at the astonishing levels of commitment and determination shown by men of his unit.

The former premises of Curtis Fine Paper became the unlikely venue for a fashion show put on by students at St Andrews University.

Models took to the catwalk for the 18th annual St Andrews charity fashion show -- FS:X -- hoping to steal a little of the limelight from London Fashion Weekend.

Up-and-coming designers and student designers showcased pieces alongside outfits from leading fashion houses, including Nicole Fahri, Tommy Hilfiger and Vivienne Westwood.

Sponsored by Schwarzkopf, Max Factor and other well-known names, the show boasted Vogue fashion features writer Sarah Harris and Daniella Helayel, from Issa London, as its patrons.
