Arbroath manager Paul Sheerin has pulled off a major coup by landing highly regarded former Leeds midfielder Josh Falkingham on a one-year deal.

But Sheerin, who beat off competition from Ayr United to land Falkingham, admitted the Lichties will do well to retain the 19-year-old's services for the duration of his contract as he's too good for the third division.

"We've done well to land Josh as he's capable of playing at a much better level than ours and I don't see him being with us overly long," said Sheerin.

"But it's an arrangement which should benefit both parties. He's going to get first-team football and we're getting an exceptional player."

Falkingham spent the closing weeks of last season on trial with St Johnstone after being released by Leeds.

He made only one appearance for the Perth club but his short stint there wasn't entirely wasted as he caught the eye of then team-mate Sheerin.

"I was gutted that things didn't work out better with St Johnstone but going there has opened this door for me," said the Englishman.

"Joining Arbroath means I'm going to get a regular game and at this stage in my career I just want to be playing.

"But I remain ambitious and am hoping that, by joining Arbroath, I'm putting myself in the shop window.

"If I play well for Paul then hopefully that will lead to my getting back into full-time football."
