It may only have been a pre-season friendly, but East Fife earned serious bragging rights over near neighbours Dunfermline with a stunning warm-up win at Bayview.

The same fixture last season ended in a 7-1 thrashing of the Methil club, but there was certainly to be no repeat on the chilly Fife coast last night as the second division outfit belied their lower-league status to record a morale-boosting success.

The visitors actually started the brighter and fashioned a chance in the fourth minute when Steven Bell's cross wasn't properly dealt with and Nick Phinn's shot through a ruck of players trickled wide.

After Calum Woods could only knock a Joe Cardle cross over the bar from close range in seven minutes, Stevie Crawford's men went on to take a surprise lead in the 15th minute.

A slip by Alex Keddie down his left allowed player boss Crawford to get to the byline and his low ball in was deftly flicked into the net by Stevie Hislop at the near post.

With 11 minutes of the first half remaining the home side doubled their advantage with a move which stemmed from the other end of the pitch.

Jordan White's header straight at Stewart Baillie allowed the Fifers to break quickly and Bobby Linn was able to beat the offside trap before coolly deceiving keeper Chris Smith with a neat chip.

Amazingly, the home side increased their advantage still further a minute later when new signing Paul Tansey's outstretched boot met Linn's low cross following a speedy counter down the right.

The visitors were roundly booed off at the half-time whistle and boss McIntyre gave it just seven second-half minutes before ringing the changes, with Andy Dowie, Steven McDougall and Paul Willis coming on.

A horrific lapse in concentration from substitute Chris Higgins merely presented the ball to Linn who fired a cracking left foot drive into the top corner to make it 4-0.

The shell-shocked Pars were a beaten side but kept going, with Woods finally able to breach the home defence by bulleting a header home from a deep corner in the 67th minute.
