The talented midfielder missed a big chunk of pre-season because of the problem and only lasted two minutes of last Sunday's game against Hearts before suffering a recurrence of the injury.
The Tannadice medical team feel there may be an underlying back problem which they hope will either be confirmed or ruled out by the MRI procedure, due to take place on Saturday.
First-team coach Gary Kirk said, "Danny will have a scan to try to finally get to the bottom of the problem.
"We want it sorted out once and for all as he had virtually no pre-season and he is an important player for us.
"We miss his creativity on the park and just want him injury-free again."
While United continue to have worries over Swanson, another player is making a better than expected recovery.
Striker Johnny Russell — who suffered ankle ligament damage after falling awkwardly while playing head tennis on the first morning of pre-season — has managed to get a bounce game under his belt.
"Johnny has been back training for a couple of weeks now and he managed to play in a bounce game with the youth team at St Andrews on Thursday," added Kirk.
"He did well and we will look to play him again in another bounce game on Tuesday against Hibs and then in the Forfarshire Cup tie the following Tuesday against Forfar.
"A few strikers have left us recently so Johnny has moved up the pecking order in the forward department at the club.
"He is a promising player and we are hoping he will do something for us this year."
