The club have turned down a £600,000 bid from Middlesbrough for Craig Conway, and Thompson is to begin negotiations with the winger and his agent on lengthening his current contract.
However, the Tannadice supremo also wants to work out with Houston an overall strategy for discussions with other members of the squad whose deals are running out.
"I am looking forward to sitting down with Peter when he comes back from Scotland duty to see what we can afford," said Thompson, who agreed severance packages with Francisco Sandaza, Jeno Myrie-Williams and Damian Casalinuovo last week.
"It was noticeable how little transfer activity there was before the window closed as there is just no money out there
"We finished third in the league and won the Scottish Cup last season and yet just one offer, for Craig Conway, came in."
He added, "The fans will be delighted that we have managed to keep all our players and we also now know the squad we will be working with until the next transfer window in January but we have to get the balance right.
"We let have let three players go but we have brought in Scott Severin and we still have a big squad by SPL standards."
Thompson said, "We would like to keep our best players and we will be sitting down with them and their agents over time, although there is no need to rush these things.
"It will be a case of seeing who wants what and whether we can agree."

I'm gutted at Dundee Utd's willingness to allow Myrie-Williams go. And trying to offload Cadamateri.
I go to every game i can manage and have only saw good things from them. Cadamateri gives his all and is clearly the best forward, while Myrie-Williams looked like the best prospect we have had.

I also want to say that It was a bad idea to appoint Daly as captain, I have never fancied him ahead of Cadamarteri. But now he is captain will be near impossible to drop.
Whats going on Utd? So much for challenging the old firm - We will be lucky to snatch 4th.

Im in pretty much complete agreement. But I think we will be lucky to make the top 6. I think we have taken atleast 2 season steps backwards so far this season. And I dont see where the next forward step is going to materialise from. Replacing 3 strikers with a central midfielder. NO NO NO!!!

Guys - I am sorry but you need to get real unless you want to see what happened across the road. Bottom line is we will never be in a great position to move forward until this $5m debt is cleared from our books. The interest etc we must be paying on that alone is what is holding this great club back

Agree somewhat about the debt.
But surely Myrie-Williams/Cadamerteri wages isn't going to dent that too much. Get rid of D.Robertson/Dodds what have they done? I pay good money would rather see Myrie-Williams flying at defences/entertainment than dour defending week in/out. Just my opinion.

Stephen Branney
I agree with your post - maybe I was being a bit optimistic regarding 4th. Top 6 looking more likely. Steve - your right about across the road, things could be worse!!

For what it's worth I agree with our Chairman not allowing C.Conway to go to middlesbrough for a measly £600K - cheeky beggars. I'm glad he told them where to go. It will set us back a bit but we could have took the money and replaced him with M-W.
Never mind - lets hope we turnover abd this sat.

Boy from Canada is talking rubbish and doesnt make any sense. United got rid of attacking players to get Severin in defence - which was a necessity. What did Casalinuovo and Myrie Williams do in the latter part of last season - nothing and we did fine without them. Back the manager-Support the team
