Jimmy Girvan died instantly and his navigator, electronics tycoon Mike Ramsay, was rushed to hospital.
Girvan's death was described as a "huge loss" to the world of motor sport. It is understood his Subaru Impreza initially collided with boulders before crashing into trees at Griffin Forest near Aberfeldy shortly before 1pm on Saturday.
The 56-year-old two-time world champion was pronounced dead at the scene by the event's chief medical officer.
Meanwhile, Ramsay (53) was cut free from the wreckage of the vehicle and taken to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, where he was treated for a fractured arm.
The forest stages rally — held in tribute to the late Colin McRae, who died in a helicopter crash in 2007 — was immediately cancelled as a mark of respect.
Girvan, from North Kessock, was taking part in his first race of the season when the tragedy struck.
His wife Fiona and daughter Caitlin are said to be "devastated" and were struggling to come to terms with their loss. The wider motor sports community shared that grief, as a spokesman for rally organiser the Coltness Car Club explained.
"We are deeply saddened and shocked by this tragedy," he said.
"Jimmy was an extremely popular, well-liked and respected motor sports personality.
"We would wish to extend our heartfelt sympathy to his wife, family and wide circle of friends."
Fiona Moir, chairwoman of the Highland Car Club where Girvan was a member, was similarly upset.
"I would like to send our condolences to Jimmy's wife Fiona and all of his friends and family. Jimmy's death is a huge tragedy and will be a big loss to motor sport.
"He was absolutely elated to win his second championship in 2008, 18 years after his first, and was doing what he really loved — driving a rally car."
