Perth-based developer Green Highland Renewables says it is “hungry” to expand further after purchasing a second hydro power site from utility company SSE.

The firm will now develop a new two megawatt scheme on land owned and manged by Forestry Commission Scotland at the Allt Coire Chaorach site in Glen Dochart.

The move comes less than a year after Green Highland moved to acquire the Allt a’ Chonais development near Achnasheen from the Perth-based power giant.

That project is due to be commissioned later this year and Green Highland said they expected Allt Coire Chaorach, which has been acquired for an undisclosed sum, would also be producing electricity by the spring of 2016.

The site already has full planning consents and the company said the construction phase of the project would begin within a matter of months.

Managing director Ian Cartwright hailed the deal and said Green Highland was keen to expand its generation portfolio and was actively looking for new sites to bring forward for development.“This is another landmark deal for Green Highland Renewables and underlines our reputation for delivering quality hydro schemes across Scotland,” Mr Cartwright said.

“We agreed with SSE that the Allt Coire Chaorach project plays to our strengths and fits our core strategy to expand our portfolio of schemes.

“We’ve now completed seven projects, have eight under construction and have a 100 per cent track record in securing consents, with 45 projects approved to date.

“We are still hungry for new sites and are actively seeking opportunities to grow our development portfolio in order to deliver more schemes across Scotland.”
