NCR move back into the black after 70 jobs cut

NCRs Gourdie operation is in an intensely competitive market.
NCRs Gourdie operation is in an intensely competitive market.

NCR’s Dundee operations returned to a pre-tax profit last year with no redundancy costs to drag down the financial performance.

The Gourdie site of NCR Financial Solutions Group Ltd is the research and development base for ground-breaking work in ATM development.

The US giant set up in Dundee to make cash registers in 1946 and once employed more than 6,500 people.

It now employs about 500 staff in research and development, a greatly reduced number following the ending of ATM manufacturing in 2009.

NCR Financial Solutions made a profit before tax of £2.2 million last year, an improvement on a £432,000 loss the previous year.

The 2013 figure included exceptional administrative restructuring expenses of almost £2m due to redundancy costs from cutting 70 jobs. Turnover in 2014 was down 5.6% at £40.9m.

A taxation charge of £4.4m including an adjustment from previous years and deferred tax, produced a loss for the year of £2.18m.

Director Mark Nicoll said the firm provides innovative products and services for business to connect, interact and transact with customers.

Its portfolio of self-service and assisted service solutions include ATMs, related software and applications.

The company operated in the intensely competitive information technology arena of rapidly changing technology, evolving industry standards and frequent product introductions.

There are also price and cost reductions and greater commoditisation of products making differentiation difficult.

Mr Nicoll said future competitive performance and market position depends on factors, “including our ability to react to competitive product and pricing measures, rapidly and continually design and develop innovative solutions and related products for our customers, and reduce costs without creating operating inefficiencies or impairing product or service quality.”

He said NCR Financial Solutions had the continued support from ultimate parent undertaking NCR Corporation, who intended “to support the company for at least one year after the financial statements are signed.”
