Work has resumed on a prominent Dundee development site after joiners walked off the job amid claims of unpaid wages.
The sub-contractor employees downed tools at the Hadden Construction-operated Eastern Primary site in Broughty Ferry last month.
They claimed they were owed hundreds and, in some cases, thousands of pounds in back pay.
The problem related to joiners working for West Lothian firm SJM Developments.
A disgruntled SJM worker said at the time he was owed £1,000 for two weeks’ work. He alleged that some colleagues had not been paid since December 17.
Hadden Construction’s business development director Stephen Lynas said his company had taken on 16 of the sub-contractor’s employees on the site.
“These are 13 joiners and three labourers who worked for the sub-contractor,” he said.
“We have taken them on to finish the contract which we hope to do on schedule.”
Mr Lynas said Hadden had temporarily drafted in some of their own tradespeople from other projects to continue work on the Eastern site after the SJM employees walked off.
“There was obviously disruption and we did manage to keep it going to some extent with our own resources,” he said.
“We are pleased that we have now been able to resume full working on the development.”
SJM Developments could not be contacted for comment on the situation when the problem surfaced on January 17.
On Thursday callers to their office heard the automated message that the phone number dialled was unrecognised.
The old Eastern Primary School closed its doors in 2011 and lay empty for two years before work began to convert the A-listed structure into 27 luxury apartments.
Original contractor Muirfield went into administration causing building work to stop briefly until Hadden Construction of Auchterarder took over the project.
So far 21 of the apartments have been snapped up.
