Alistair Phillips-Davies.

Alistair Phillips-Davies, chief executive of Perth-based SSE, has been appointed vice-president of European energy association Eurelectric.

He takes up the position this month, providing strategic advice to help the organisation contribute to the development and competitiveness of the electricity industry across the Continent.

Eurelectric represents the common interests of the electricity industry across the EU, as well as affiliates and associates on several other continents. It has more than 30 members representing the electricity industry in 32 countries.

He will support new Eurelectric president Antonio Mexia, former Portuguese energy minister and chief executive of EDP (Energias de Portugal). He will also work alongside fellow vice-president Jean-Bernard Levy, chairman of EDF (lectricit de France).

The vice-presidential term is for two years and is combined with his position as SSE chief executive.

Mr Phillips-Davies said: “I am delighted to be taking on this important role at a critical time for the electricity industry across Europe.

“With the start of a new commission, the publication of the Energy Union, the Climate Change Conference in Paris and the forthcoming EU referendum in the UK, it’s an important time to engage in the debates about how we can deliver a market that provides secure and low-carbon electricity supplies and meets the expectations of our customers.”

Antonio Mexia said: “Europe’s energy system of tomorrow is dependent on the commitment of our industry CEOs and the valuable experience and vision they bring to our sector.

“I am honoured to work alongside such distinguished industry leaders.”
