A Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art graduate has been drafted in to redesign Starbucks’ flagship London branch.
Aberdeen-based Johanna Basford won the commission after bombarding the chain with her designs for the past 18 months.
The company is refurbishing its London stores ahead of the Olympics and the diamond jubilee celebrations.
Johanna, who has worked as a freelance designer and illustrator since graduation, was asked to create a bespoke wallpaper for the first of the company’s renovations in London’s Vigo Street.
The branch is one of six that will be given individual redesigns.
Johanna’s illustrations have been used by a range of illustrious clients from beer company Brew Dog and Thorntons, and even on the special edition of Susan Boyle’s CD, Someone To Watch Over Me.
Thom Breslin, director of design for Starbucks UK and Ireland, said the company wants to create stores with more individual character.
He said: ”As one of 70 London renovations taking place over this summer, Vigo Street headlines our London portfolio” As such we have given it high-profile design treatment, restoring and celebrating the original features including the Turkish hand-carved mahogany and mother-of-pearl ceiling and adding features such as unique chandeliers, glass mosaic tiles and bespoke wallpaper.”
