Fundraiser deserves Oscar for 5,000-mile cycle tour with doggie trailer

Maggie and Oscar have been racking up the miles.
Maggie and Oscar have been racking up the miles.

A four-legged traveller has rolled into Fife on two wheels on a fundraising mission inspired by Sport Relief.

Golden retriever Oscar is being towed around the country in a doggie trailer by owner Maggie Scorer on her bicycle.

The nomadic pair aim to raise £25,000 for two charities by pedalling 5,000 miles around the British coast.

On Tuesday, they crossed the Forth Road Bridge into the Kingdom, having covered more than 500 miles since setting off from their home in Suffolk in March.Maggie should be heading across the Tay Bridge and into Dundee today. Follow progress at dogontour.co.ukThey stopped off in Kirkcaldy and their trip will also take them through Lundin Links, St Andrews, Arbroath and Montrose.

Grandmother-of-eight Maggie has already been accompanied by seven-year-old Oscar on a sailing voyage half round the world.

The 66-year-old expects her latest venture to take five to six months, cycling an average of 30 miles a day.

The trip is self-funded, with Maggie and Oscar staying overnight at B&Bs, friends’ houses or, in Maggie’s words, “any old barn” to keep costs down.

They have already raised more than £10,000 for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and stillbirth and neonatal death charity, Sands.

Both charities are close to Maggie’s heart as she lost a baby shortly after birth almost 40 years ago and her son-in-law Dan Turnball was diagnosed with blood disorder myelofibrosis five years ago.
