The principal and vice-chancellor of St Andrews University has welcomed news that it has again been ranked one of the top 100 in the world in a new international league table.

Scotland’s oldest university is placed 88th in the QS World University Rankings 2014/2015, published at www.topuniversities.com.

It is the eighth year in succession that St Andrews has made the world’s top 100.

Professor Louise Richardson said: “St Andrews is smaller in size and endowment, and more focused on ensuring that a focus on research does not distract from the highest quality teaching, than the typical top 100 institution.

“To have been able to maintain a place at the top for eight years in succession is a testament to the talents of all who work and study here, particularly at a time of significant growth in overseas competition and uncertainty about the future of higher education in Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom.

“It is gratifying that our core strengths in research and teaching as well as our appeal to international students have been recognised by this important ranking.”

The university was rated highly for the reputation of its arts faculty and its natural sciences departments, plus its ability to attract the best international staff and students.

This year, St Andrews was also ranked within the top 200 in the world for its quality of students, its academic reputation, number of academic citations and its reputation amongst employers.
