Angus woman Helen Sturrock dies aged 102

Mrs Helen Sturrock.
Mrs Helen Sturrock.

One of the oldest women in Angus has died at the age of 102.

Mrs Helen Sturrock passed away peacefully at Storyville Nursing Home in Kirriemuir.

Born in Kingoldrum in 1912 to a farming family, she attended Airlie school before starting as a weaver at Wilkie’s in Kirrie.

She joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service and relocated to Nottingham before returning to Angus.

She met her husband-to-be George, a farmer and a fiddler in local bands, and the couple were married in 1942. They had one child, Bruce, who was born the following year, and later moved to Forfar.

Mrs Sturrock worked as a weaver in Craiks jute mill in Forfar before retiring in the early 1970s.

In her retirement she enjoyed cooking and knitting and shopping with her younger sister Alice. Mr Sturrock died in 1993.

Son Bruce said: “My mum always looked after herself and enjoyed a brandy before she went to bed.

“She was in the nursing home for the past three years but even there she was only on one pill a day, to boost her calcium.

“She was extremely fond of her grandchildren and very well liked by everyone at the nursing home.”

Mrs Sturrock is survived by her son and grandchildren Denis and Paul.
